Practicing Gratitude During the Holidays

Newton Village - Practicing Gratitude During the Holidays

While practicing gratitude is important all the time, it can be especially helpful during the holiday season, a time that is filled with both joy and high expectations.

“Gratitude is an attitude of appreciation expressed with thanks,” explained Pastor Dan Jordan, Chaplain at Newton Village. “The Bible says that people are to be thankful and to practice thanksgiving. The holiday season is a busy time, with families partaking in unique traditions, buying gifts for family and friends, and scheduling gatherings. But some people have lost loved ones who they wish were still with them. Others may not have the resources to give as they would like. Some can’t host or attend gatherings, and may not enjoy the food and laughter as they once did.”

According to Pastor Dan, there are many benefits from practicing gratitude. “Gratitude is life giving, to yourself and to others,” he said. “Being appreciative and expressing thanks builds positive esteem and value, and it releases personal and interpersonal stress. Focus on what was learned from an error; focusing on the error itself can be harmful to yourself and to your relationships.”

Ingratitude generates negativity, stress, and isolation. “There’s always something to complain about, and that’s where many people focus their attention,” added Pastor Dan. “The occasional gripe session can be healthy if it clears the air, but constant griping demoralizes and repels healthy relationships.”

Pastor Dan offers ideas for expressing gratitude in your life. “Review how your faith affects your spirit,” he said. “Simplify your expectations. Think through what you truly value, and treasure it. Release what others (and you) expect. Appreciate difficult times; all good stories have struggle. Grieve with gratitude; it’s healthy to grieve loss. Reminisce about people and memories, and be thankful for a richer life. Restrain entitlement. Choose contentment, and want what you have. Express thanks both privately and publicly, as your words have such power!”
