Newton baseball falls twice to rival Indianola

Grinnell pulls away late in run-rule victory

INDIANOLA — Newton fell behind conference rival Indianola 1-0 in both of its baseball games against the Indians on Friday.

One of those matchups ended in a 2-0 loss, but Indianola scored the sweep with a 12-2 win in the opener of the Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader.

The Indians scored their two runs in the nightcap in the first two frames.

They went from a 2-1 lead in the opener after two innings to a 10-run mercy rule in five frames. Indianola broke the game open with a seven-run third.

The Cardinals were limited to four hits and committed three errors in the 12-2 loss. They were out-hit 5-3 in the second game.

Cade Bauer led Newton (3-10, 1-7 in the conference) with two hits and one steal in the nightcap and tossed six strong innings on the mound.

Bauer (0-2) took the pitching loss after allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk.

He leads the Cardinals with 19 total bases and a .405 batting average this summer.

Lane Rozendaal had the other hit. Creighton Andrew, Gabe Otto, Drew Bauer and Dakota Winkleman registered the four hits in the opener.

Otto led Newton with his first career varsity homer, Drew Bauer had one RBI and Derek Wermager walked once and scored one run.

Otto (2-3) took the pitching loss after surrendering nine runs — seven earned — on six hits, three walks and two hit batters in 2 2/3 innings.

Rozendaal tossed 1 1/3 innings and allowed three runs — two earned — on one hit and three walks. He also struck out one.

Indianola, which has won four straight games, is now 25-1 against Newton since 2017 and the Indians have won five in a row in the series.

Asher Brueck homered and had two RBIs to lead Indianola (10-3, 4-2) in the opener. Andrew DeWall doubled and scored two runs and Brody Merema walked twice.

In the nightcap, Daxton Heimbaugh had two hits and Bryant Ritchie struck out seven and allowed three hits in a complete-game shutout.

Grinnell 11, Newton 1

GRINNELL — Cade Bauer registered two hits and scored the team’s only run of the game, but the Cardinals fell 11-1 to Grinnell on Thursday.

Newton scored its run in the fourth to close its deficit to 3-1, but the Tigers plated six in the fifth and two in the sixth to end the non-conference game early due to the mercy rule.

Grinnell (5-6) is 29-15 against Newton since 2009. The Tigers have won seven straight and 18 of the past 19 against the Cardinals.

Cade Bauer’s two hits, one run and one steal led Newton. Kreytein Wickliffe doubled and Wermager walked once, but Newton was out-hit 11-3 and committed four errors.

Carter Lehrman (0-3) took the pitching loss after allowing five runs — four earned — on five hits and three walks. He struck out three in four innings.

Wermager threw one inning and surrendered two earned runs on two hits and one hit batter. He fanned one.

Cade Bauer got the other two outs as Grinnell ended the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Bauer allowed four runs — three earned — on four hits and one walk.
