Newton girls win road triangular, boys finish second

Junior varsity bowlers take third at conference tournament

MARSHALLTOWN — The Newton bowling teams competed in a triangular on Monday, and the format was changed to 15 Baker games the night before the meet.

The Cardinal girls led early, dropped to second after 10 games but rallied to win over host Marshalltown and Ames, while the boys finished second behind the Little Cyclones at Wayward Social.

The Newton girls led by 26 pins after five games, trailed by eight after 10 but used a strong finish to win the meet with 2,092 pins. Ames was second with 2,060 and Marshalltown finished third with 1,948.

On the boys’ side, Newton led by 14 pins after five games but trailed Ames by 17 after 10. A strong finish by the Little Cyclones pushed them to the victory with 2,904 pins.

The Cardinals were second with 2,738 and Marshalltown finished third with 2,663.

The varsity girls’ team featured Libbie Keith, Genessa Slings, Gabbie Humphrey, Aeris Archer, Marissa Burns and a mix of a few junior varsity bowlers.

The team did not have the services of varsity bowlers Maria Baxin or Kelly Holmes.

The Cardinals’ best games were 161, 157 and 152.

In the boys’ matchup, Newton posted six games of 200 or better. The Cardinals opened with a 213 and had a 215 in the 14th game and a 226 in the ninth game.

Ames’ night included eight 200-plus games, including a 269, 206 and 222 in the final set of five games. Marshalltown posted three 200-plus games with its best being a 220.

Competing for the Newton varsity were Austin Kennedy, Sebastian King, Owen Guldberg, David Holmes, Andrew Wiles and Tamion Adams.

Genessa Slings

The Cardinal boys’ junior varsity team also competed on Monday and won the triangular with a score of 2,485. Ames was second with 2,271 pins and Marshalltown finished third with a 2,076.

The six Cardinals competing for the JV were Jarret Sweeney, Gentry Swarts, Alex Kearse, Ethan Valtman, Landon Gooden and Nathan Hauber. Their best score was the 222 they rolled in the sixth game.

Cardinals finish third in JV conference meet

AMES — Both Cardinal squads finished third in the conference JV invitational at Perfect Games on Tuesday.

The Newton boys finished 26 pins behind champion Gilbert and Ballard edged the Cardinals by eight in second. On the girls’ side, Gilbert and Bondurant-Farrar held down the top two spots, while Newton trailed the champion Tigers by 65 pins.

The team of Hauber, Swarts, Kearse, Sweeney, Gooden and Valtman posted a score of 2,460 on the boys’ side. Gilbert won the tournament with a 2,486 and Ballard was second in the eight-team field with a 2,468.

The team standings were based off 15 Baker games. The individual results came from a three-game series score.

Hauber finished third overall with a 574 series, while Swarts (557) and Kearse (545) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Sweeney (513) finished 10th, Gooden (455) was 14th and Valtman (436) took 17th. Hauber rolled a 220 in one of three games, while Swarts and Kearse each bowled a 202.

All six Cardinals earned all-conference awards, while Schultz and Burns were all-conference on the girls’ side.

Schultz was ninth in the JV standings with a 331, while Archer (318) finished 12th, Burns (312) ended up 16th and Jullina Hinds (293) placed 20th. Lili Baxin was 30th with a 244.
