Short-handed Newton girls finish 10th at Linda Bloom Invitational

Cardinals shoot 419 at annual golf tournament

MARSHALLTOWN — The Newton girls’ golf team was missing two varsity regulars during the Linda Bloom Invitational on Thursday.

Without No. 1 golfer Marin Pettigrew and No. 3 Evie Main, the Cardinals finished 10th in the 14-team field at American Legion Golf Course.

Newton shot 419 and trailed conference rival Dallas Center-Grimes by 27 strokes.

Waukee Northwest won the meet with 333 and Grundy Center was next with 337. The rest of the top five featured Waukee (358), Ames (360) and Marshalltown (360).

“It was awesome to be at the tournament to honor Linda Bloom,” Newton head girls golf coach Nicole George said. “I remember her from high school golf — Coach Enyart and her had a great friendship and we even had a heart with her initials in it on my senior year polos.”

Ella Price and Eva Pak shot 100s to lead the Cardinals. Price’s nine-hole splits were 50-50 and Pak had 53-47 splits.

Addison Hook (107) and Addie Ratcliff (112) were the final two scoring golfers and Addison Van Maanen (116) and Kalleigh Berndt (116) turned in identical non-counting scores.

Pettigrew did not play in the tournament because of a prior commitment and Main has been ruled out for the season with an injured wrist by head girls golf coach Nicole George.

Marshalltown’s Natalie Henson was the meet medalist with a 68 and Waukee Northwest’s Hannah Pettitt carded a 71 as the runner-up medalist. No other golfer shot better than 82.
