Newton boys finish fourth at Osky Relays

Cardinals register three wins at Statesmen Community Stadium

OSKALOOSA — A fantastic night in relays and double points in a handful of individual events highlighted the Newton boys’ track and field team’s effort at the 95th Osky Relays on Thursday.

The Cardinals won three events and placed in the top three in six others as they scored 92 points in fourth place at Statesmen Community Stadium.

Knoxville won the team title with 130 points and the rest of the top five included Oskaloosa (115), Pella (102) and Ottumwa (82). Des Moines North (66) and Twin Cedars (1) capped the seven-team field.

Landon Menninga and Caden Klein both won an individual event and the Cardinals’ 4x200 relay team also sprinted to victory.

Menninga won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 3.52 seconds and Presley Arnold finished sixth in a season-best time of 5:13.29.

Klein won the 400 hurdles in a career-best time of 58.6 seconds and Brody Bauer was fourth in 1:01.16.

The 4x200 relay team of Cody Klein, Curtis Payne, Reilly Trease and Christian Ergenbright claimed a victory in a season-best 1:33.31.

The Cardinals also were second and third three times.

Cody Klein and Payne finished 2-3 in the 200. Klein was second in a career-best 23.72 seconds and Payne finished third in a season-best 24.05.

The distance medley and shuttle hurdle relay teams also placed second.

In the distance medley relay, the team of Trey Davidson, Austin Arauz, Koltt Ahn and Menninga finished second in 4:03.03 and the shuttle hurdle relay group of Payne, Caden Klein, Bauer and Trease took second in a season-best 1:05.58.

The other third-place finishes came from Javin Doland in the 800 and the sprint medley relay team.

Doland registered a time of 2:12.31 in the 800 and the sprint medley relay team of Eli Stewart, Wyatt Weter, Nathan Milburn and Menninga placed third in 1:45.08.

There were two other fourth-place finishes. Bauer finished fourth in the 110 high hurdles with a career-best time of 16.99 seconds and Caden Klein placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches.
