Talented Boone too much for Newton boys tennis team

Cardinals swept by Toreadors in season opener

The Newton boys’ tennis team is young and inexperienced. And the Cardinals kicked their season off against maybe one of the best teams on their schedule.

It all added up to an 11-0 loss as Newton won just six games in the head-to-head matchup at Aurora Heights Park.

“Boone is a very good team and we are very young,” Newton head boys tennis coach Jared Gerber said. “We had some good moments in every match that we’ll try to take forward with us as we continue to get better.”

Newton’s top six varsity singles players for the opener were Evan Marshall, Ethan Valtman, Seth Adams, Collin Buchli, Ezra Bartell and Andrew Wiles.

The lone senior from that group is Buchli. All six players lost in straight sets and the only two who won a game were Bartell and Wiles.

In doubles competition, Marshall and Bartell lost 6-1, 6-1 and Buchli and Wiles were defeated 6-2, 6-0.
