Newton volleyball goes 0-3 at ADM quadrangular

Cardinals lose to Algona in three sets

ADEL — Newton’s volleyball team won all three matches during its home quadrangular on Tuesday.

Two days later, the Cardinals dropped all three matches at a road quadrangular hosted by ADM of Adel.

The closest match of the night came against Algona, which downed Newton 24-22, 25-27, 15-10. Class 3A No. 2 Des Moines Christian defeated the Cardinals 21-8, 21-10 and host ADM swept Newton 21-17, 21-15.

“We played a bit on our heels and in our heads,” Newton head volleyball coach Heidi Woollums said. “But we did have players step up at times when we needed them.”

In the loss to Algona (1-2), Kadance Ahn recorded her first double-double of the season. She finished with 11 kills, 12 digs and two aces.

Emily Wermager tallied 21 assists and seven digs, Delaney Woollums chipped in a career-high nine kills and six digs and Chloe Swank registered 12 digs.

Audrey Rausch added two assists, two kills and four digs and Chloe Rorabaugh had two digs. The Cardinals (3-3) were 52-of-56 in serves.

“Delaney Woollums stepped up and hit well against Algona with a .240 hitting efficiency,” Coach Woollums said. “Audrey Rausch serve received well against Algona and ADM.”

In the loss to the state-ranked Lions (4-0), Ahn had four kills and three digs, Wermager dished out nine assists and Swank tallied seven digs.

Woollums put down four kills and Rausch added a pair of digs. Newton was 18-of-19 in serves.

Wermager led the Cardinals in the loss to ADM (2-1). She registered 10 assists and six digs. Ahn added six kills and three digs, Woollums tallied three kills and two digs and Rausch chipped in two kills and four digs.

Swank finished with 10 digs, Hailey Sumpter had two digs and Rorabaugh recorded two blocks. The Cardinals were 30-of-33 in serves.

“Chloe Swank was all over the court and dug the ball well, finishing with 29 digs in the three matches,” Coach Woollums said. “Chloe Rorabaugh was our block leader and Hailey Sumpter served 100 percent on the night.”
