SULLY — Lily Zylstra had three hits at the plate and two big innings helped Lynnville-Sully’s softball team claim its biggest win of the season against Belle Plaine on Monday.
The Hawks trailed 2-0 early but plated three in the third and three in the fifth to down the Lady Plainsmen 6-4 during South Iowa Cedar League play.
Belle Plaine scored one run each in the final two frames but it was not enough. The loss knocked the Plainsmen out of the Class 1A state rankings.
Lynnville-Sully (5-10 overall, 4-4 in the SICL) out-hit Belle Plaine 10-9 and the Lady Plainsmen committed eight errors.
Zylstra finished with three hits and one double and she scored one run. Aliya James had two hits and two runs, Abby Squires doubled, scored one run and had two RBIs and Greenlee Smock tallied one hit, one run and one stolen base.
Reagan McFarland finished with one hit and one run, Elise Alberts registered one hit and one RBI and Jakiera Hay collected one hit and one walk.
James earned the win in the circle after allowing four runs — zero earned — on six hits. She had one strikeout and one hit batter in seven innings.
Kiley Alcott led Belle Plaine (9-5, 7-2) with three hits and two runs. Breanna Cook allowed six runs — none earned — on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Tri-County 11, Lynnville-Sully 7
THORNBURG — A strong start and a quality finish lifted Tri-County to an 11-7 win over Lynnville-Sully on Wednesday.
The Hawks scored three in the first but lost the SICL game after allowing six in the bottom of the first and five in the sixth. The Trojans (8-5, 6-3) out-hit the Hawks 9-6 and L-S committed four errors.
Smock, James, Squires, Hay, Alexy Conover and Makayla Tice had the Hawks’ six hits.
James’ hit was a home run and she had four RBIs, Smock added two runs, two steals and one walk and Tice tripled, scored one run, had two RBIs and walked once.
Squires doubled and walked once and Alaina Roberts walked once, scored one run and was hit by a pitch. Zylstra was hit by a pitch and Hay, Morgan Jones and McFarland all stole one base and Jones added one run scored.
Conover started in the circle and took the loss after allowing five runs — three earned — on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. She struck out two, walked four and hit one batter.
Alberts pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and surrendered five earned runs on three hits. She walked two.
Delanie Little homered and had three RBIs at the plate and struck out five over seven innings in the circle.

Lynnville-Sully 6, Montezuma 4
MONTEZUMA — The Hawks used a four-run second inning to grab an early lead and then added a pair of runs in the fifth to close out a narrow 6-4 road win over Montezuma during SICL play on June 3.
The win gives L-S a season split with the Bravettes. The Hawks won the game despite committing four errors.
Both teams had five hits. Montezuma (2-10, 2-6) attempted a late rally with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
McFarland registered two hits, two runs and one RBI to lead the offense.
Smock, Zylstra and Squires all had one hit. Squires drove in two runs and Smock scored one run and stole one base.
James, Olivia Norrish and Jones all scored one run and James and Norrish had one steal each.
Alberts pitched the first six innings and earned the win after allowing two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and six walks.
James recorded the save after surrendering no runs and no hits in the seventh. She struck out one.

BROOKLYN — The Hawks exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning and pulled away from BGM during an SICL matchup on May 31.
L-S led the Bears 6-5 through three innings, but the 12-run fourth pushed the visitors to an 18-5, five-inning victory.
McFarland had four hits, one triple, four runs and two steals. Smock, Zylstra and James all had two his apiece.
Smock added two runs, one RBI, one walk and one steal, Zylstra cranked out two doubles, scored three runs, had one RBI and walked once and James doubled, tripled and tallied two RBIs.
Squires had one hit and added three runs, three RBIs and one walk, Alberts doubled, scored two runs, tallied two RBIs and drew two walks and Conover doubled, scored one run, added one RBI and walked once. Tice was hit by a pitch, scored three runs and stole one base.
Conover earned the pitching win after surrendering five runs — two earned — on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks in four innings.
Chloe Etten doubled, scored one run and had two RBIs to lead BGM, which fell to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the SICL.

COLFAX — The Tigerhawks held L-S to two hits and downed Lynnville-Sully 5-1 during an SICL matchup on June 1.
Colfax-Mingo led 2-0 after four innings and then plated three in the fifth to finish off the win.
L-S scored its lone run in the sixth and the Hawks were plagued by three errors.
Alberts had one hit and one walk, McFarland scored one run and stole three bases, Tice had one hit and Zylstra collected the RBI.
James pitched six innings and took the loss after allowing five runs — two earned — on five hits with one strikeout, two walks and two hit batters.
Abi Rawlins had two hits, two runs and one RBI to lead the Tigerhawks (7-3, 6-1) at the plate. Kylie Doty struck out five over seven innings in the circle.

SULLY — An early lead for the Hawks held up during a 6-5 home win over North Mahaska on May 21.
Lynnville-Sully led 5-2 after four but had to hold off a late North Mahaska rally. The Hawks took advantage of six Warhawk miscues in the field and had 13 hits at the plate.
McFarland led the team with four hits, three runs and one steal. Squires had three hits, doubled once and had one RBI and Zylstra and Alberts each registered two hits. Zylstra also collected one RBI.
James tallied one hit, one run, one RBI and one steal, Hay had one, Conover and Norrish scored one run each and Smock had an RBI.

SULLY — McFarland had five hits and scored four runs during Lynnville-Sully’s 13-4 non-conference home win over Baxter on June 2.
The Hawks cranked out 14 hits and took advantage of five Baxter errors. They scored scored five runs in the third to break a 2-all tie and coasted from there.
McFarland chipped in one RBI and stole two bases, too. The Hawks finished with eight steals in the win.
Squires tallied two hits, two RBIs, one walk and one steal, Roberts finished with two hits, one run, one RBI and one hit by pitch and Smock doubled and had four RBIs.
James registered one hit, two runs, one walk and one steal and Tice added one hit, one run, one RBI and one steal. Zylstra collected one hit, one run and two steals, Jones had one hit, one run and two walks, Kate Harthoorn chipped in one run and one steal and Alberts and Norrish scored one run each.

L-S loses to pair of LHC squads at Oskaloosa tournament
OSKALOOSA — Both 4A Oskaloosa and Newton jumped out to fast starts against Lynnville-Sully during the Oskaloosa tournament on June 4.
The Hawks cranked out six hits in each game but fell short in loss to the Indians and Cardinals. Oskaloosa (7-7) downed the Hawks 14-4 in five innings and Newton defeated L-S 10-7.
The Hawks only had six hits against Oskaloosa. McFarland tallied two hits and scored two runs to lead the L-S offense.
Zylstra and Squires each had one hit and one RBI and Smock tallied one hit and one run. Hay collected one hit, Jones scored one run and Harthoorn stole one base.
James took the loss after allowing 12 runs — seven earned — on 11 hits with three walks and one hit batter in four innings.
Alberts tossed one inning and surrendered no earned runs on four hits in one inning.
Oskaloosa’s Alexis Price blasted two homers and Presley Blommers also homered.
Against Newton (5-9), the Hawks fell behind 4-1 after two innings. Both teams scored six runs the rest of the way.

Hawks fall twice at North Polk tournament
ALLEMAN — Lynnville-Sully faced a pair of Class 4A programs at the North Polk tournament on May 28.
The Hawks were limited to six hits on the day and they committed seven errors between the two games during a 6-5 loss to Pella and a 7-1 defeat to host North Polk.
In the loss to the Lady Dutch (7-9), L-S had just two hits but walked 10 times and stole nine bases.
The Hawks led 3-1 after one inning, but Pella rallied with a three-run second. The game lasted four innings because of time limit.
Squires led the offense with one hit, one run, one RBI, two walks and one steal.
Smock walked three times, scored two runs and stole four bases, Tice walked twice and had two steals and McFarland scored one run and stole two bases.
James drew two walks, Zylstra finished with one hit, Alberts scored one run and had one RBI and Hay walked once.
Alberts started in the circle and took the loss after allowing five runs — two earned — on five hits with one strikeout, one hit batter and three walks in three innings. Conover pitched 2/3 of an inning and surrendered no earned runs and walked one.
The Hawks registered four hits and committed five errors in the loss to 4A No. 13 North Polk.
McFarland, Smock, Zylstra and Squires had one hit each. McFarland scored one run and stole two bases, Smock stole one base and Zylstra and Squires both doubled. Morgan Jones also stole one base.

EDDYVILLE — The Hawks were out-hit by 10 and committed five errors during a 16-6, five-inning road loss to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on May 24.
Lynnville-Sully fell behind early and then the Rockets plated five runs in the third to pull away even further. EBF (9-5) scored six in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early.
McFarland led the L-S offense with two hits, two runs, two RBIs, one walk an done steal.
The Hawks had six hits total. The others came from James, Zylstra, Conover and Smock. James doubled, scored one run and walked once, Smock had one run and one steal and Zylstra tallied one RBI.
Squires added an RBI and Hay was hit by a pitch and scored one run.
James started in the circle and took the loss after allowing 15 runs — nine earned — on 16 hits with three walks in five innings.
Megan Lobberecht led the Rockets with four hits, two runs and three RBIs and Molly Shafer and Sarah Schutt both homered. EBF stole 10 bases as a team.
