Slow starts plague Tigerhawks in losses to Braves

MONTEZUMA — The Class 1A No. 14 Montezuma girls basketball team came out of the locker room strong during a South Iowa Cedar League game against Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday.

The Bravettes led 18-5 after one quarter and outscored the Tigerhawks 21-10 in the third during a 64-32 home win.

The Tigerhawks were out-rebounded 28-21 and turned the ball over 23 times in the loss.

Abi Rawlins led the Tigerhawks with 14 points, two rebounds and three steals and Carley Underwood registered 10 points and two steals. Caylee Cunningham had seven rebounds, Charlotte Donahue collected five points and four rebounds and Kyra Lester pulled down five boards.

The Tigerhawks (5-11 overall, 4-7 in conference play) shot 33.3 percent from the floor, 3-of-15 from the 3-point range and 7-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Montezuma (14-2, 11-1) got 18 points and six rebounds from Shanae Wetering and Mia Boulton had 14 points, four rebounds and five assists. The Bravettes shot 44 percent from the floor, 8-of-19 from long range and 10-of-15 from the line.

Montezuma 68, Colfax-Mingo 44

A big first half by Montezuma and a huge night from Eddie Burgess was too much for Colfax-Mingo’s boys basketball team on Tuesday night.

The Braves got out to an early lead and never looked back during a 68-44 home win. Burgess’ career night included 30 points, 24 rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Montezuma, which out-rebounded Colfax-Mingo 40-28, led 15-4 after one and 36-13 at halftime. The Braves won the second half 32-31.

Cole Bracewell scored a team-best 15 points and grabbed two rebounds and Cael Bracewell led the Tigerhawks (3-12, 2-10) with 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Joe Earles put in eight points, Colton Lind registered four points, two assists and two steals and Harrison Rhone scored five points. Trey Hockemeier pulled down five rebounds, Carter Gibson grabbed four boards, Jared Lewis swiped two steals and Brandon Kite dished out two assists.

The Tigerhawks shot 34 percent from the floor, 5-of-21 from 3-point range and 3-of-5 from the line. Colfax-Mingo committed 17 turnovers.

The Braves (12-3, 11-2) shot 48.4 percent from the floor, 6-of-23 from long range and 0-of-2 from the line.
