IvaLou Bertine (Ellenwood) Schomer, 92, of Newton died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials in Iva’s name (checks made payable to Dan Schomer or Tricia Evans) may be left at the funeral home.

Iva, the daughter of Harry and Florence (Nunguesser) Ellenwood, was born March 26, 1929, in Newton. She was a lifelong resident of Newton, graduating from Newton High School in 1948. On Aug. 19, 1948, Iva was united in marriage with Earl Warren Schomer in Newton. She worked for the Newton Manufacturing company from high school until her retirement in 1988. Iva was a member of the First Baptist Church and RSVP. She had volunteered at Skiff Medical Center as a greeter and in the cataract surgery department. Iva enjoyed crocheting, Sudoku puzzles, reading and spending time with family. She also had a collection of bells, pink elephants and teapots. Iva was a proud breast cancer survivor and her gift as a tissue donor will help other breast cancer patients.

Iva is survived by her daughter, Tricia (Dennis) Evans of Newton; son, Danny (Dixie) Schomer of Ankeny; sister, Edna Edge of Washington, Ill.; grandchildren, Scott Evans, Eric Evans, Josh (Cathy) Evans, Aaron (Amy) Schomer, Phil (Angie) Schomer and Jason Schomer; great-grandchildren, Jensen, Koby, Tristan, David (Sami), Katie, Kyle, Brianna, Nolan, Brendan, AnnaLee, Dillan, Hayden and Kinnick; her great-great-grandson, Ace Matthew; and a great-great-grandson on the way in November, Jet Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Warren in 2004; and her siblings, Opal Couch, Raymond Ellenwood, Clifford Ellenwood, Mickey Lahey, Lucille Curry, Lloyd Ellenwood and Louise Birkenholtz; and two brothers in infancy.
