Newton parents charged with child endangerment, neglect

A Newton couple has been charged after a three-month investigation revealed the couple’s child had multiple broken-bone injuries.

According to a press release, the Newton Police Department arrested Jessica Agan, 21, and Stormy Agan, 21, on Feb. 25 for two counts of child endangerment and one count of child neglect or abandonment.

The charged stem from an incident on Nov. 24, 2020 when the NPD was called to MercyOne Newton Medical Center in reference to a 3-month-old baby who had been brought to the hospital with a broken arm. After further examination, medical staff discovered the child also had a broken rib.

These injuries were deemed “inconsistent with an accident,” according to the report.

Officers interviewed the parents of the child, Jessica Agan and Stormy Agan, who had been the child’s caregivers on the date the child was taken to the medical facility. Officers received conflicting accounts of how the baby’s injuries may have occurred.

The NPD entered into a joint investigation with the Iowa Department of Human Services and obtained additional medical information. Records showed the child had also been treated for a broken leg, which doctor’s described as a highly specific fracture from non-accidental trauma, according to the report.

The Agans face multiple felony charges and were transported to the Jasper County Jail. At their initial appearance on Feb. 26, bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety and both were released. Their preliminary hearings will be at 10 a.m. March 8.
