The Jasper County League of Women Voters will present a community information session on the proposed Iowa Constitutional amendment at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Newton Arboretum, 3000 N. Fourth Ave. E. Janet Carl, former state representative and current League member, will present the amendment and discuss its potential impact should it pass. The session is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
The proposed amendment was passed by two successive legislatures and will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot labeled as Public Measure 1. As Carl will explain, the amendment is not identical to the federal Second Amendment.
“In my view, this is the most important decision Iowa voters will make this year. It will affect legislation related to gun safety for many years to come,” Carl said. “Many people don’t yet realize that it is even on the ballot or what exactly the wording is and what it means. That is why it’s so important to educate voters on the topic.”
