Gordon “Gordy” Schmidt, 55, of Baxter, passed away Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021, at MercyOne in Newton. A celebration of Gordy’s life will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at Bea’s Place in Baxter. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Gordy was born June 12, 1966, to Arthur and Shirley (Scarbrough) Schmidt in Newton. He grew up outside of Baxter on the family farm. He also fell in love with driving semis. While attending Baxter High School he met the love of his life, Barb Metz. Gordy graduated from Baxter High School in 1984 and began trucking. He and Barb called Baxter home and in 1991 they got married at The Little Brown Church in Nashua. Gordy later took a job with the secondary road crew with Jasper County. He also helped his boys during the harvest. Gordy loved to spend time with his family including his pets and dogs, telling or texting jokes, drinking time in his shop with buddies telling trucking stories, fishing trips to Canada, bear hunting in Wisconsin, cruising as Team Bago in their Jeep, truck shows, showing his semi off and vacationing with family to Colorado, Reno and Lake Tahoe. Gordy’s loud boisterous laugh will be missed by all.

Those left to cherish his loving memory are his wife, Barb Schmidt of Baxter; sons, Randy Schmidt of Baxter and Brandon Schmidt of Baxter; mother, Shirley Schmidt of Baxter; sisters, Phyllis Twaddle and Jo (Dave Little) Johnson; nieces and nephews, Mindy (Marty Parks) Johnson, Michael Johnson, Josh (Danella) Twaddle, Jaci Twaddle, Krystal Irwin, Brandy Irwin and Brittany Irwin; great-nephews, Kyler Johnson and Jacob Andrews; uncle, Arnold Schmidt; aunts, Elaine Eytchisons and Donna Starr; and sister-in-law, Deb Irwin. He was preceded in death by his father, Art; grandparents; in-laws, Frank and Carol Metz; and brother-in-law, Mark Metz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
