Baxter wrestling goes 2-1 to start season

SIGOURNEY — Baxter's wrestling team struggled to put together a full lineup in its first season of competition last winter.

This season, the Bolts got off to a much better start and went 2-1 in their season-opening quadrangular on Thursday night.

Sophomores Cole Smith and Curtis Gliem and freshman Callyn Bishop all went 3-0 on the night as Baxter defeated WACO and Cardinal and lost to host Sigourney-Keota.

The Bolts opened the night with a 45-18 win over Cardinal. They then lost 34-15 to the Cobras before closing the night with a 54-0 victory over WACO.

Bishop had two pins and a win by forfeit at 160 and 170 pounds on the night. Smith and Gliem each had one pin and Gliem also won a 10-8 decision against Sigourney-Keota.

In the win over WACO, freshman Ashton Kerwin won by fall at 120, Smith won by forfeit at 126 and Gliem won by fall at 138. BIshop also won by fall at 170. Sophomore Kolton Hill, senior Brad Matthews, freshman Cody Samson, freshman Jacob Hiemstra and senior Micah Kearns all won by forfeits at 145, 152, 160, 182 and 285, respectively.

In the win over Cardinal, Kerwin (138), Smith (126), Gliem (132), Hill (160) and Bishop (170) all won by forfeit. Matthews won by fall at 145 and Kearns won by pin at 285.

The three wins against Sigourney-Keota came from Bishop and Smith by fall at 160 and 126, respectively, and Gliem 10-8 at 138.

Baxter competes in the Woodward-Granger tournament at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Woodward.
