REG donates to local chamber

Renewable Energy Group has donated $5,000 to the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce to help support the chamber during this unusual year.

“We know that 2020 has been a difficult year for many of the communities where we reside,” REG’s Joel Mills said. “In many cases, businesses have had to close or reduce service, therefore significantly impacting their revenue.”

Mills said this has also had an impact on the chamber as many businesses may not be able to pay their dues and the potential for new members has also been hampered by the pandemic. The chamber has had to make adjustment throughout 2020 as many of their fundraising events were canceled or changed because of COVID-19.

“Therefore, we are designating $5,000 to our local Chamber of Commerce to help them with expenses during this difficult time,” Mills said.

Chamber director Amanda Price said the organization was “humbled and appreciative” for the donation from REG.

“We are uncertain about our 2021 year and this will be helpful in filling some of those unknowns. We very well may see a reduction in memberships due to COVID-19 in 2021 and also more cancellations or alterations to fundraising events, so we want to be prepared for not only our organization, but our business members. It would be amazing if we could help our local businesses and organizations with scholarships, retaining those members for 2021.”

Where the money will be used has not been decided but Price said it will be put to use based on what chamber members need most.

“Thank you to REG for supporting our organization and our community,” she said.
