Mustangs claim two team titles

DES MOINES — PCM’s boys track and field team had to move its home meet to Saydel High School, and the Mustangs were without a couple of key seniors, but that didn’t stop them from rolling to the team title on April 25.

The Mustangs claimed 10 wins and piled up 18 top-three finishes during a near 100-point win. PCM scored 194.5 points in first. Wayne (105), Knoxville (105), Pleasantville (96.5) and North Mahaska (78) completed the top five of a seven-team field.

Individually, Payton Strovers won the 100-meter dash (season-best 11.65 seconds) and the long jump (season-best 20 feet, 4 1/2 inches), Nigel Sperfslage won the 200 (season-best 23.86), Jacob Van Winkle finished first in the 400 (season-best 54.56) and Cole Dustin hit the line first in the 110 high hurdles (season-best 15.7).

PCM scored double points in several events. Connor Bennett gave the Mustangs a 1-2 finish in the 100 as he was second in 12.0 seconds. Aidan Anderson took third in the 400 (55.17) and Beau Webb was third in the 1,600 (4:54.39).

Seth Greiner (118-6) and Isaac Telfer (116-2) went 2-3 in the discus, Telfer was the runner-up in the shot put (44-9 1/2) and Dustin was third in the high jump (5-4).

PCM also dominated the relays, winning the 4x100, 4x400, sprint medley, distance medley and shuttle hurdle.

The sprint medley relay team of Brayton Van Dyke, Bennett, Wes Cummings and Sperfslage won with a time of 1:39.79.

The shuttle hurdle relay team was missing two regulars in Reed Worth (golf) and Jarron Trausch (illness) but still won. Nick Buswell ran for the first time this season after sustaining a preseason injury and he teamed with Sperfslage, Justin Maggard and Dustin to win in 1:05.85.

The distance medley relay team of Dustin, Cummings, Bennett and Webb won in 3:58.63 and the 4x400 relay team of Anderson, Bennett, Strovers and Sperfslage won with a time of 3:44.06.

The 4x200 relay also was third. The team of Van Dyke, Cummings, Telfer and Van Winkle completed the race in 1:44.66.

PCM competes in the HOIC meet at 4 p.m. on May 2 in Nevada.

Mustangs cruise to team title at EBF

EDDYVILLE — PCM piled up 18 top-three finishes and cruised to the Class A team title at the annual EBF Boys Rocket Relays on April 23.

The Mustangs won five individual events and seven total, collected double points in four races and scored 159 points on the night to win their second team title of the season.

Dustin won the 110 high hurdles (15.93 seconds) and the high jump (5-8), Worth won the 400 (52.82 seconds), Strovers won the long jump (19-11 3/4) and Webb was victorious in the 1,600 (4:53.74).

PCM also won the 4x100 and shuttle hurdle relay.

The 4x100 relay team finished first with a time of 45.08. The foursome included Van Winkle, Worth, Van Dyke and Strovers.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Trausch, Sperfslage, Worth and Dustin won with a time of 1:04.54.

PCM’s individual second-place finish came from Worth in the 200 (23.75). The 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, sprint medley and distance medley relays also were second.

The 4x200 relay team of Van Dyke, Sperfslage, Cummings and Trausch were second in 1:36.91, the 4x400 relay team of Anderson, Cummings, Bennett and Van Winkle took second in a season-best time of 3:42.85 and the 4x800 relay team of Landon Fenton, Carson Duinink, Ayrton Breckenridge and Fabio Sammet was second in a season-best time of 9:43.34.

The sprint medley relay included Van Dyke, Strovers, Sperfslage and Webb and they finished in 1:42.04. The distance medley relay featured Cummings, Trausch, Bennett and Webb and they hit the finish line in 3:54.91.

PCM claimed five third-place finishes, including Strovers in the 100 (11.89), Anderson in the 400 (55.56), Sperfslage in the 400 hurdles (57.27) and Telfer in both the shot put (44-1 1/2) and discus (season-best 121-2).
