PCM wins team title at Bear Trax Classic

BROOKLYN — Nigel Sperfslage didn’t win the 400-meter hurdles during PCM’s boys’ track and field meet at the Bear Trax Classic on April 16.

But his time of 56.04 seconds was above the cut-off line for the annual Drake Relays.

Sperfslage placed second in the event, was tied for the 12th best time in the state and ranked second in Class 2A as he helped lead the Mustangs to their first team title of the season.

PCM won the Class A Division with 134 points. The Mustangs held off BCLUW (123) by 11 points. None of the other five schools in the field scored more than 100 points.

Sperfslage moved below the line for Drake Relays by the time the deadline hit on April 18, but he still ranks third in 2A.

PCM won the meet despite winning only three events. Individually, Cole Dustin won the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches) and Payton Strovers won the long jump (20-2 1/2).

PCM also won the sprint medley relay. The team of Brayton Van Dyke, Strovers, Preston Van Wyk and Reed Worth set a new school record and meet record with a time of 1 minute, 37.95 seconds. That time ranks sixth in 2A.

The Mustangs claimed six second-place finishes and scored double points in the 100, 400, discus, long jump and shot put.

Isaac Telfer was the runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 45-5 3/4. Seth Greiner finished fourth (41-3).

The 4x100 relay team of Jacob Van Winkle, Worth, Van Dyke and Strovers were second in a season-best time of 45.02 seconds. That time qualifies the foursome for this week’s Drake Relays.

The 4x200 relay foursome of Strovers, Van Dyke, Wes Cummings and Jarron Trausch took second in 1:36.75.

The distance medley team of Dustin, Cummings, Van Winkle and Beau Webb also were the runner-up in 3:55.54.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Trausch, Sperfslage, Worth and Dustin finished second in a season-best time of 1:02.62. That time ranks seventh in 2A.

The 4x400 relay team was third. The pairing of Cummings, Aidan Anderson, Connor Bennett and Sperfslage finished in 3:46.

Individually, Greiner was third in the discus (118-5) and Telfer was fourth (107-5).

Dustin was third in the 110 high hurdles (16.94) and Webb was third in the 1,600 (5:05.13).

Worth and Van Wyk tied in the 100. Both Mustangs were third in 11.98 seconds.

Anderson finished third in the 400 (55.07) and Bennett was fourth (57.42). The final top-five finish came from Will Oelmann, who was fifth in the long jump (17-6 1/2).
