Mustang baseball thumps 3A Nevada

NEVADA — Scoring at least one run in all but one inning, the PCM baseball team blasted Class 3A Nevada, 14-4, on July 3.

PCM cranked out 16 hits and took advantage of five Nevada errors during their Heart of Iowa Conference contest.

The visiting Mustangs scored two runs in the first, third and seventh innings, one run in the fifth inning, three in the fourth frame and four in the sixth inning.

The win helped the Mustangs (10-13 overall, 3-11 in the HOIC) split the season series with the Cubs.

“There were some underlying factors that motivated us tonight,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said.

“The kids wanted to prove they weren’t going to be pushovers. They just kept their foot on the pedal and piled on runs as we went along.”

At the plate, PCM junior Preston Van Wyk was 5-for-5 with four runs, three RBIs and three steals.

Sophomore Dane Owens had three hits, two RBIs and one run and freshman Caleb Duinink added three hits and one RBI.

Duinink’s courtesy runner, senior Colton Warrick, scored three runs.

Junior Reed Worth tripled, scored three runs, walked once and was hit by a pitch.

Junior Brayton Van Dyke had two hits, scored one run and had one RBI, senior Noah Henkenius had one run, one walk, one hit by pitch and one steal and junior Wes Cummings had one hit and one RBI.

Junior Olin Meinders tallied one hit and one run and sophomore Derek Brown added an RBI.

Brown started on the mound and earned the win after tossing the first 4 2/3 innings. He allowed four earned runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Junior Preston Van Wyk got two outs against the Cubs (13-12, 6-8) and allowed one hit and two walks with one strikeout.

Henkenius pitched one inning and didn’t allow a baserunner.

Van Dyke pitched the final 2/3 innings and allowed one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
