LE GRAND — The PCM boys’ basketball team couldn’t overcome a hot shooting night from West Marshall during a Class 2A District 13 semifinal on Feb. 15.
West Marshall buried 10 3-pointers and used a big run in the first half to take control, and then held off a late PCM rally during a 61-58 victory.
The Mustangs got within three after sophomore Derek Brown buried a 3-pointer with 3:53 left.
Alex Dickey answered with a trey of his own to put the Trojans back up six points.
West Marshall missed enough free throws in the final minutes to keep the game close. The Mustangs (16-6) could never get over the hump.
The Trojans led 19-18 after one quarter and then used a 10-4 run to go up 29-22. They led by 12 points at halftime.
A 10-0 run to start the third quarter got the Mustangs back in the game, but West Marshall answered with a 7-0 spurt to take back control.
West Marshall led by six after three quarters and led by eight with 1:29 to play in the game.
Trojans (15-7) advanced to the district finals where they will played No. 7 East Marshall, which eliminated Pella Christian 43-41, on Feb. 20.
Junior Andrew Van Ryswyk led the Mustangs with 18 points, nine rebounds and three assists, senior Jackson Thomas chipped 13 points, six rebounds and three assists and junior Reed Worth scored 10 points, grabbed four boards and dished out three assists.
Sophomore Jason Stafford tallied seven points and three rebounds in the season-ending loss.
West Marshall outscored the Mustangs 20-9 in the second quarter and had 15-point advantage from 3-point range and a three-point surplus at the free-throw line.
Beau Coberly led the Trojans with 17 points, and Dickey scored 15. West Marshall also got 12 points from Peyton Pope. Coberly dished out four assists and Pope grabbed six rebounds.
