Healthy relationship education training offered by Iowa State Extension

Are you a professional working with couples and families, and would like additional tools to help couples build healthy relationships?

“We know children growing up in a home where there is a healthy, stable couple relationship have fewer behavioral and emotional problems and perform better in school”, said David Brown, a human sciences specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “That is why healthy couple relationships are so important.”

Healthy Relationship Education Training is a one day program designed for professionals who work with couples and families to increase access to relationship education as a strategy to meet the safety, permanency, and well-being needs of children. This program uses a research-based curriculum that is being shared nationally with professionals so they can encourage the development of healthy couple relationships.

Mahaska County Extension and Outreach is sponsoring Healthy Relationship Education in Oskaloosa in June. The curriculum consists of 8 modules, which are based on the National Extension Relationship and Marriage Education Model (NERMEM). Brown, who is also a licensed marital and family therapist, and Joy Rouse, Human Sciences Specialist, will conduct this class. Interactive lessons, discussions and resources will be provided.

The program is scheduled for June 23 at the Mahaska County Extension office, 212 North I S., in Oskaloosa, Iowa from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. There is a $90 fee for the program. Fee includes a curriculum manual and tools.

For more information or to register, contact the Mahaska County Extension Office at 641-673-5841.
Iowa social workers, LMFT's and LMHC's should contact their licensing boards to determine course approval for continuing education contact hours.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer 6.00 contact hours for those professionals who complete the full course.
