Phifer, Henkenius lead PCM to win over rival Greene County

JEFFERSON — Four Prairie City-Monroe Mustang baseball players combined for eight of the team’s nine hits during a 5-4 win over Greene County in the season opener on Monday.

Junior Braden Phifer had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs to lead the way at the plate for PCM, while sophomore Noah Henkenius allowed five hits and struck out five in five innings on the mound.

Henkenius earned the win in his first start of the season. He allowed one run but it was unearned. Greene County scored three runs in the sixth inning against freshman Brayton Van Dyke, but the Mustangs held off the rally to start the season 1-0 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

Juniors Sheldon Speers and Noah Clark and Henkenius all had two hits apiece. Freshman Preston Van Wyk had the other hit for the Mustangs.

PCM trailed 1-0 in the game but scored single runs in the second and third innings to take the lead and a three-run fourth inning put the game away. The Mustangs did not score in the final three innings.

The Mustangs (1-0, 1-0) play at home for the first time this season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against South Tama County.
