Experts disagree on sanity of DM homicide defendant

DES MOINES — Experts have disagreed about whether a man was insane when he attacked an elderly couple in their Des Moines home last year. Prosecutors have alleged that 20-year-old Ngor Makuey intended to rob 97-year-old Rupert Anderson and his wife, 94-year-old Harriet Anderson, when he broke in on July 2, 2014. Rupert Anderson was fatally injured, but his wife survived. Dr. Luis Rosell testified Thursday that Makuey believed creatures had entered his body and ordered him to attack the Andersons.

Rosell says that shows Makuey was exhibiting signs of schizophrenia.

However, Dr. Michael Taylor testified that he found no evidence that Makuey suffered from “command hallucinations.”

The nonjury trial will go to the judge after Friday’s final arguments.
