DES MOINES — Jurors have convicted a Pleasant Hill man of first-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend’s fiance.
The Polk County jury on Wednesday found 27-year-old David Moffitt guilty in the shooting death of 30-year-old Justin Michael. Moffitt killed Michael on May 8, 2014, after breaking into his Grimes home. He shot Michael as he slept beside his fiance, Angie Ver Huel, who previously had a relationship with Moffitt.
Moffitt’s attorney acknowledged Moffitt killed Michael but offered an insanity defense, saying his client suffered from mental illness.
