JOHNSTON — Newton High’s girls knew they had a tough task going in to the Class 2A team tennis regional Saturday. The Cardinals faced top-ranked Des Moines Roosevelt, which hadn’t lost a dual all season.
The Cardinals didn’t win a game in the five singles matches, losing to the Roughriders 5-0.
Roosevelt senior Mary Hill defeated Newton sophomore Megan Pressgrove, 6-0, 6-0. Newton junior Sierra Griffith lost 6-0, 6-0 to sophomore Alex Kozlowksi. Freshman Eren Sagun beat Newton junior Kate Wyre, 6-0, 6-0.
Roosevelt senior Meera Prasad posted a 6-0, 6-0 decision of sophomore Katherine Thorpe. Newton freshman Bethany Baumgartner lost 6-0, 6-0 to sophomore Shivani Kumaresan.
Newton finished 5-5 in duals in the regular season.
