Marvin H. Weeks, 90, of Newton passed away Wednesday evening, Aug. 24, 2011, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A funeral service for Marvin will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton. A visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 29, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton.

In lieu of flowers memorials in Marvin’s name are being designated to Newton First Presbyterian Church or Elks Lodge #207. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Marvin Harold Weeks, the son of Minor Rutherford and Arilla Mae (Allen) Weeks, was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Faith, S.D. He was a graduate of the Corydon, Iowa, Senior High and valedictorian of the class of 1939. Marvin had served his country as a captain with the U.S. Army during World War II, in reconnaissance throughout Europe, the D Day Invasion, Normandy, Battle of the Bulge and was among the first Americans to link with the Soviet Union at the Elbe River. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the Belgian Quad De Guerre.

On Feb. 27, 1948, Marvin was united in marriage with Mary Jean Santen in Newton. He devoted his life to his family and grandchildren. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Newton Country Club, Last Men’s Club, past president of the Maytag Management Club, Newton Elks Lodge, serving as its secretary for 50 years, and Newton American Legion Post #111. Marvin was employed as production manager for the Maytag Company, Plant I. He enjoyed golf, traveling, bowling, fishing and was a Newton Cardinal, Iowa Hawkeye and Cub fan.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jean, on Aug. 28, 2000; a sister, Delma Mae; and brothers Kenneth and Keith.

Those left to honor Marvin’s memory include his son, Thomas M. (Susan) Weeks of Newton; his daughter, Nancy J. (Steven) Stoner of The Woodlands, Texas; four grandchildren, Thomas J. Weeks of Burbank, Calif., Steven Weeks of Newton, Sara Stoner of Dallas, Texas, and Kayla Ayres Stoner of Salisbury, Md.; a foster grandchild Alla (Louis) Smothers of Urbandale; a brother, Melvin Weeks of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Jeanine Santen of Newton; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Paul Kemmerling of Abbington, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and his many friends.
