Poor shooting night plagues Newton girls in home loss to rival Pella

Cardinals can’t overcome slow start against No. 14 Lady Dutch

A tough shooting night and 22 turnovers plagued the Newton girls basketball team against Class 4A No. 14 Pella on Friday night.

The Cardinals fell behind early, was limited to two points in two of the four quarters and didn’t make a 3-pointer during a 53-23 home loss in Little Hawkeye Conference play.

Pella led 12-6 after one quarter and outscored Newton 20-2 in the second and 15-2 in the third. The Cardinals won the fourth 13-6.

Addy Cibula led Newton with five points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Camryn Klein posted six points and three rebounds, Sophia Coady and Payton Carkhuff each totaled four points and four boards and Tori White grabbed eight rebounds.

Brooke Garvis pulled down three rebounds and Molly Meyer had two boards off the bench.

The Cardinals (3-4, 0-3 in the LHC) shot 22.5 percent from the floor, missed all four of their attempts from 3 and connected on 5-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Emma Walkup led Pella with 18 points, five rebounds and five steals.

She was 4-of-7 from 3, and the Lady Dutch (4-3, 1-1) connected on 11-of-29 from 3. Pella turned the ball over 13 times and swiped 16 steals.
