Phillips wins title, Tigerhawks place ninth at Chariton Girls Invitational

CHARITON — Nine Tigerhawks competed at the Chariton Girls Invitational on Saturday, and a quartet of wrestlers posted top-three finishes as the Colfax-Mingo girls wrestling team placed ninth out of 19 teams.

The Tigerhawks scored 102 points in ninth and trailed Sigourney/Keota (104) by two points and Davis County (105.5) by 3.5 points.

Kennedy Phillips headlined Colfax-Mingo with a bracket championship at 190 pounds. Isabella Cushatt was second at 145 and Emmalyn Buchman (235) and Londyn Alanis (140) were third at their weights.

Ottumwa won the tournament title with 206.5 points. Class 1A No. 2 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (151) was second, 1A No. 5 Clarinda (124.5) placed third and the rest of the top 10 included Pekin (122.5), West Marshall (116.5), Knoxville (115), Davis County (105.5), Sigourney/Keota (104), Colfax-Mingo (102) and North Mahaska (96.5).

Phillips, who is ranked 10th in 1A, was 4-0 with four pins at 190. Two of those came in the first period, and she’s now 21-4 on the season.

Cushatt (20-6) finished second and was 2-1 with two pins at 145. Her only loss came against 1A No. 8 Hailey Pedrick of Pekin.

Alanis (20-9) placed third at 140 after a 3-1 day. She registered two pins.

Buchman (24-3) finished 4-1 and placed third at 235. She posted three pins, defeated 2A No. 10 Ashlyn Van Manen of Newton twice and pinned 2A No. 9 Mariah Ripperger in 48 seconds.

Buchman’s only loss came against 2A No. 5 Delilah Subsin of Ottumwa.

Emily Cook lost her first match of the day at 235 but finished 3-1 with three pins. Lily Anderson (135) was 1-2 with one pin and Brianna Freerksen (18-10) was 2-2 with two pins at 125.

Ottumwa scored 206.5 points with 18 wrestlers. The only team with fewer wrestlers who finished ahead of Colfax-Mingo was Clarinda, which scored 124.5 points with eight grapplers.
