Three Bolts place third to help Baxter girls take sixth at Tiger Invitational

CARROLL — A trio of third-place finishes highlighted the Baxter girls wrestling team at the Tiger Invitational on Friday night.

Four Bolts competed in a tournament hosted by Carroll, and they placed sixth out of eight teams with 57 points.

Baxter edged East Sac County (54) and finished well in front of Pocahontas (37) in the final standings.

Host Carroll won the meet with 162.5 points. Carroll Kuemper (158.5) was close behind in second and the rest of the top five included Sioux Central (119), Panorama (112) and Sioux City East (84).

Madison Jochems won three times and placed third at 170 pounds, while Kenzie Wignall (120) and Maylayla Hurd (235) also were third at their weights.

Jochems opened her day with a pin in the first period and then lost 21-4 in the semifinals. She rebounded with back-to-back pins to place third. One of those came in the first period and the other one came with her trailing 9-3 in the second.

Wignall and Hurd both lost their first matches of the day. Wignall then won by fall after leading 10-6 in the third and won by fall when trailing 3-2 in the first. Hurd posted back-to-back pins that lasted a total of 56 seconds.

Johnelle Gliem opened with a 36-second pin at 170. She then lost twice by fall to finish fourth. She was 1-2 for the day and her second loss came with her trailing 12-11 in the third.

Gliem, Jochems leads Bolts at Michelle Jensen Memorial Tournament

HUMBOLDT — Jochems won three of her four matches, Gliem was 2-1 at her weight and both Bolts placed third to lead Baxter at the Michelle Jensen Memorial Tournament on Tuesday.

The Bolts placed 12th in the 13-team field with 36 points. Host Humboldt won the tournament with 218 points. GTRA (199), South Central Calhoun (140), Hampton-Dumont/CAL (127.5) and Emmetsburg (99.5) completed the top five.

Jochems was third at 130 after winning twice by fall and once by 9-4 decision. Gliem was third at 170 following a win by fall and a win by medical forfeit. She lost her first match of the tournament.

Wignall finished sixth at 120. She won 11-3 and then lost three consecutive matches. Hurd was 0-2 at 235.
