NORWALK — The Newton girls wrestling team had a significant advantage in forfeit wins against Norwalk and Oskaloosa on Tuesday night.
But the Cardinals couldn’t overcome too many losses on the mat against the Warriors and split a pair of duals against Little Hawkeye Conference foes.
Newton accepted all eight forfeits in its 58-18 win over Oskaloosa but fell 51-30 to host Norwalk.

Class 2A No. 10 Ashlyn Van Manen took a pair of forfeits at 235 pounds and Shawna Foreman (155) and Grace Guy (170) also were 2-0 on the night.
Against Oskaloosa, Newton was 2-3 in contested matches but won the dual because of an 8-0 advantage in forfeit wins. The forfeits were taken by Siearra Woody (100), Kylee Adams (115), McKayla Jackson (125), Brailynn Bakalar (130), Sarah Malow (140), Foreman (155), Guy (170) and Van Manen (235).
Haylee Adams (120) also won her match by fall and Peyton Hoen scored a 12-4 win over 145. It was the first career varsity wins for both Jackson and Malow.
Norwalk was 8-3 in contested matches against Newton. The Cardinals had a 2-1 advantage in forfeit victories. Those forfeits were accepted by Van Manen and Natalia Patterson (135).
Foreman, Guy and Alivia Conley (125) all won by fall. Foreman and Guy scored pins in the first period.
Notes: Class 3A No. 10 Mia Luck (140) of Oskaloosa won her match by fall against Newton at 135.
Cardinals split four duals, place third at Red Owens Holiday Classic
ALTOONA — Kylee Adams and Van Manen both won all four matches and Foreman was 3-1 with two pins.
That helped the Cardinals split its four duals and place third at the Red Owens Holiday Classic on Saturday.
Newton edged Winterset, 39-36, dominated East Union 51-24 but lost to Gilbert (48-18) and host Southeast Polk (70-9).
The Cardinals split their six contested matches against East Union but won the dual because of a 6-1 surplus in forfeit victories.

Conley (125), Sadie Booth (140), Foreman (155), Guy (170), Chelsea Vanderleest (190) and Van Manen (235) all took forfeits, while Kylee Adams (115) and Haylee Adams (120) each won by fall and Rosa Borja (110) claimed a 7-4 win by decision.
The Cardinals edged Winterset mostly because they had a 3-1 advantage in forfeit wins. But Newton was 4-5 in contested matches.
Borja won 9-5 and Kylee Adams, Foreman and Guy all won by fall. Foreman’s win by pin took 12 seconds, Kylee Adams needed 23 seconds for her pin and Guy registered a first-period fall.
Haylee Adams, Vanderleest and Van Manen took the forfeits against the Huskies.
Gilbert was 9-3 in contested matches and the other two weights went down as double forfeits. Kylee Adams won her match by fall in 30 seconds, Foreman scored a first-period pin and Van Manen also won by fall.
The Cardinals were 2-10 in contested matches against Southeast Polk and the Rams took both forfeits. Kylee Adams won 11-7 and Van Manen posted a win by fall.
Kylee Adams finished 4-0 with three pins, Van Manen was 4-0 with two pins and two forfeits, Foreman was 3-1 with two forfeits and Haylee Adams, Guy and Vanderleest were 2-2.
Kylee Adams spent 100 seconds on the mat in the three matches she won by fall.
