Humphrey, Baskerville leads Newton bowlers in split of Urbandale

Jayhawk boys edge Cardinals by 18 pins

Gabbie Humphrey won another meet and Braden Baskerville climbed to the top of the standings for the first time in his varsity career, but the Newton bowling teams split its matchup with Urbandale on Monday.

Finishing strong was a theme for the Cardinal girls as Humphrey and Aeris Archer were at their best at the end of their individual games.

That helped keep Newton unbeaten on the season and it edged the Jayhawks 2,351 to 2,190. The Cardinals led Urbandale by 109 pins entering the Baker round.

Jeremiah Killmer

Baskerville and Jeremiah Killmer were 1-2 on the boys’ side and Ascher Austin posted a career-best series in fourth, but the Jayhawks were better one through six during their 18-pin victory. Urbandale edged the Cardinals 2,786 to 2,768 at Cardinal Lanes.

Humphrey was not at her best on the girls’ side but still edged Urbandale’s Abby Pawlowski by 10 pins.

Humphrey won the meet with a 353 series after posting single games of 170 and 183. Humphrey’s 170 game included a strike in the eighth frame and 29 pins in the 10th.

Pawlowski was second with a 343 series after rolling a 203 in her second individual game.

Newton took the next three spots though and went 3-4-5-7 in all. Archer finished third with a 341 series. She started with a 151 and ended with a career-best 190.

Archer rolled three straight strikes twice, including once in the 10th frame, during her 190 game.

Aeris Archer

Kelly Holmes began her day with a 196 but ended with a 126 and her 322 series put her in fourth. Braleigh Slings was fifth with a 300 series after rolling single games of 151 and 149.

Mackenna Burns (283) was seventh and Lili Baxin placed 11th. Burns rolled single games of 158 and 125 and Baxin posted a career-best 135 in her first game and had a career-best 256 series after rolling a 121 in her second game.

The Cardinals (5-0) extended their lead with a 160-128 advantage in the first Baker game. Humphrey closed out multiple Baker games with strong 10th frames to secure the team win.

Urbandale (3-2) was better overall in the final four games though as Newton had just a 12-pin surplus in Bakers.

Newton’s junior varsity girls team was led by Aliviah Lewis’ 229 series and Jalyssa Neer posted a 223 series.

Baskerville’s first-place finish on the boys’ side included a career-best 436 series. He opened with a 190 and finished with a career-best 245.

Baskerville’s second game included strikes in frames 2-3-4 and 7-8-9-10.

Killmer opened with a 194 and finished with a 234 and his 428 series was good enough for second.

Austin started with a 187 and rolled a career-best 209 in his second individual game. His career-best 394 series placed him fourth.

Owen Kearse (317), Jarret Sweeney (305) and Carter Maki (267) were 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively, though.

Kearse rolled a career-best 190 in the opener but finished with a 127, Sweeney turned in individual games of 152 and 153 and Maki posted games of 119 and 148.

Urbandale’s Damien Timm (408) finished third and Timothy Dang (391) placed fifth. Timm’s second game was 248 and Dang finished with a 212.

Newton (1-3) led the Jayhawks by 60 pins after the individual round, but Urbandale rallied with a fast start in the Baker round.

The Jayhawks (4-0) won the opener 196-174, rolled a 205 in the third game and finished with a 203. Newton had Baker games of 190 and 213 but also rolled a 174, 163 and 146.

Thaddeus Lewis led the Newton boys JV with a 329 series. Will Buren posted a 326 and Bentley Heck rolled a 323.
