PCM boys rout Perry, edge Greene County in HOIAC play

Mustangs return home on three-game win streak

PERRY — Bryson Karr and Coby DeRaad scored career highs off the bench, four Mustangs reached double figures and the PCM boys basketball team routed Perry on Tuesday.

The Mustangs shot 55.6 percent from the floor and made eight 3-pointers at one end of the floor and blocked 10 shots at the other during a 74-35 road win in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference action.

PCM, which has won five of the last six in the series, doubled up the Bluejays in the first quarter, extended the margin with an 18-11 advantage in the second and then put the game away for good with a 29-point third frame.

Karr scored a career-best 12 points and added two rebounds and two assists off the bench. Gavin Steenhoek put in 11 points, Chase Wagaman and Kevin Thomas each had 10 points and DeRaad totaled eight points off the bench.

Seven Mustangs scored at least six points and nine put in at least three.

Wagaman filled up the box score with eight rebounds, two assists, three steals and four blocks.

Steenhoek posted two rebounds, two assists and two steals, Thomas tallied four rebounds and two assists and DeRaad grabbed three boards.

Kash Fischer finished with six points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals and Andy Bellinghausen collected six points, three rebounds and four blocks off the bench.

Abe Kieran had four points, three rebounds and two assists, Joe Shaver posted four rebounds and three assists and Hayden Shannon put in three points off the bench.

PCM (4-2, 3-1 in the HOIAC) made 8-of-15 from 3, knocked down 6-of-8 from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 15 times. The Mustangs out-rebounded the Bluejays 34-27.

Gustavo Drahos and Gavin Leslie led Perry with nine points each and Owen Zander grabbed seven rebounds.

The Bluejays (1-4, 1-3) shot 28.6 percent from the floor, made 6-of-23 from 3, made 1-of-2 from the foul line and committed 24 turnovers.

PCM 63, Greene County 60

JEFFERSON — Kiernan scored all of his career-high 11 points in the first half and Wagaman and Thomas combined to score 25 in the final two frames and the Mustangs edged Greene County, 63-60, on Friday.

PCM led by two after one, went into halftime with a 30-21 lead and held off a second-half rally by the Rams during HOIAC play.

The Mustangs overcame 17 turnovers in the win. They swiped 13 steals and shot 45 percent from the floor. Greene County hung around in part because it buried 10 treys.

Wagaman led PCM with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and steals. He scored 13 of his 15 in the second half.

Thomas scored all 12 of his points in the final two frames and added two rebounds and six steals.

Kiernan grabbed seven rebounds to go along with his 11 first-half points. Fischer posted nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench, Shaver chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and four assists and Steenhoek registered three rebounds and two assists.

Bellinghausen posted four points and four rebounds off the bench, and the Mustangs were 5-of 18 from 3 and made 14-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Broc Stream scored a game-high 23 points. He made five of his six 3-pointers in the second half and Lincoln Schwander and Zack Stalder each scored 11 points. The Rams were 6-of-12 from the foul line.

The Mustangs are 14-2 against Greene County (1-4, 0-3) since Dec. 8, 2017, and PCM has won five straight in the series.

PCM 64, North Mahaska 45

NEW SHARON — The Mustangs swiped 17 steals and dominated the first and third quarters in their 64-45 non-conference road win over North Mahaska on Dec. 8.

PCM led 19-7 after one and won the third by the same score. The Mustangs held an 18-17 advantage in the second, but North Mahaska won the fourth 14-8.

Fischer led the Mustangs with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench. Thomas added 12 points and three steals.

Karr put in nine points off the bench, Shaver totaled eight points and nine boards and Wagaman chipped in five points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Bellinghausen contributed four points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals off the bench and Steenhoek registered four points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Kiernan posted four points and four rebounds, DeRaad totaled three rebounds and two steals off the bench and reserve Joey Ferneding scored the first two points of his varsity career and grabbed two rebounds.

The Mustangs shot 41.3 percent from the floor, made 3-of-14 from 3 and connected on 9-of-16 from the foul line.

PCM turned the ball over 13 times and out-rebounded the Warhawks 38-28.

Trenton DeBruin led North Mahaska (2-2) with 18 points and seven rebounds and Jaxon VanDerVeer chipped in 12 points, four rebounds and six assists.

North Mahaska shot 47 percent from the floor but made only 3-of-16 from 3 and 4-of-11 from the foul line. The Warhawks also turned the ball over 25 times.
