Colfax-Mingo’s Buchman, Phillips headline area wrestlers with titles at Saydel

Newton’s Van Manen, Adams finish second at their weights

DES MOINES — Class 1A No. 10 Kennedy Phillips and Emmalyn Buchman both pinned their way to bracket championships at the Saydel Girls Wrestling Invitational on Friday.

The Tigerhawk duo led wrestlers from three area teams with undefeated runs at 190 and 235 pounds, respectively.

Colfax-Mingo also got a third-place finish from Isabella Cushatt and Lily Anderson and Londyn Alanis placed fourth at their weights to help the Tigerhawks finish third in the 19-team field.

Emmalyn Buchman

Class 1A No. 2 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont won the tournament championship with 177.5 points and Ogden finished second with 144.5.

But third through seventh was separated by only seven points.

Colfax-Mingo scored 116 points in third. The Raccoon River Northwest junior varsity scored 114.5 in fourth, host Saydel (114) was fifth and Clarinda (113.5) place sixth.

The Johnston JV (109), Newton (92.5), Perry (92.5) and Chariton (69) completed the top 10. PCM scored 40.5 points in 15th.

Newton’s day was highlighted by Kylee Adams and Ashlyn Van Manen, who both were second at their weights.

PCM’s Emma Beyer finished fourth at 170 and Hadley Millang placed fifth despite losing only once on the day.

Colfax-Mingo entered 13 wrestlers in the tournament and 11 won at least one match.

Phillips was 4-0 with four pins at 190 and Buchman won all three of her matches by fall at 235.

Kylee Adams

Phillips pinned Newton’s Lily Fuchs in the first period and needed just 13 seconds to pin PCM’s Lilly Birkenholtz, who was sixth for the Mustangs at 190.

In the finals, Phillips scored a win by pin in the first period over Ogden’s Grace Hammer, who is ranked fifth in 1A. Her other pin came in 53 seconds against Chariton’s Keira Jackson, who is currently ranked 11th in 1A at 235.

Buchman started her day with a pin against PCM’s Emilyn Davis and then ended it with a win by fall over Van Manen, who is ranked 10th in 2A.

Cushatt was third at 145 after a 2-1 day. She won twice by fall, including once while trailing 3-2 in the second period.

Anderson placed fourth at 135 and Alanis finished fourth at 140. Anderson was 2-2 with a win by pin over Newton’s Sadie Booth. She also had a 51-second pin but lost twice to former teammates Alauna Wells and Jozlyn Wells of Ogden. Alauna Wells edged Anderson, 8-6, in their match.

Alanis was 1-2 at 140. She opened with a 3-0 win but lost her next two matches.

Lily Brenner was the other placing wrestler as she was sixth at 135. She won three times, including once by fall and once by 9-0 major decision.

Alivia Conley

One of Brenner’s losses came to Millang, a former teammate who trailed 14-6 in the match and 14-9 at the time of the pin.

Karoixa Snyder (120) and Samantha Wheeler (155) were 2-2 at their weights, while Callie Rathje (110), Brianna Freerksen (125) and Ella Snyder (130) all finished 1-2.

Karoixa Snyder defeated Newton’s Leamsi Sanchez by fall and then won a match 7-5. Wheeler won twice by fall and lost twice by fall. One of her wins came against PCM’s Carly Wilkerson.

Ella Snyder opened with a 4-3 win but lost her next two matches. Rathje won by fall in 34 seconds but lost her final two matches, too.

Freerksen opened with a win by fall but lost 7-5 in her next match before losing by pin against Newton’s Alivia Conley.

Emily Cook (235) lost both of her matches to Van Manen and Newton’s Isabel Talley and one of Brooklynn Audas’ losses came against PCM’s Beyer.

Shawna Foreman

The Cardinals entered 18 wrestlers in the tournament but six were 0-2 and seven finished 1-2.

Van Manen was 2-1 with two pins at 235. One of her wins came against Cook by pin in the second period. Buchman pinned Van Manen in the third period of their championship match.

Talley placed fifth at 235. She as 3-1 with three pins, including a first-period pin over Cook. Her loss was against Ogden’s Ruby Tasler in the first round.

Adams scored bonus points in all three of her wins at 115. She won twice by pin and once by 15-0 technical fall. Her loss came in the finals to 1A No. 2 Cadence Christensen of EBF.

Conley was fifth at 125 but was 3-1 for the day. She lost her opening-round match by fall but scored three wins by pin after that. After pinning Freerksen, Conley won her next match by fall with a 5-4 lead and then ended her day with a second-period in a match she trailed 9-2 in.

Rosa Borja was sixth at 110. She was 3-2 with three pins, including one over C-M’s Rathje. She lost her first and last matches of the day.

Siearra Woody (100), Brailynn Bakalar (130), Booth (135), Shawna Foreman (155), Payton Bradley (170), Grace Guy (170) an Fuchs (190) all were 1-2.

Emma Beyer

Woody posted a 39-second pin, Foreman won her match by fall in 52 seconds and Bakalar, Bradley and Guy all won by fall.

Bradley was losing 3-2 at the time of her win but medically forfeited her final two matches. Guy lost once to PCM’s Beyer, Fuchs dropped one of her matches to C-M’s Phillips and Booth lost to C-M’s Anderson and PCM’s Millang.

Anna Portas (110), Haylee Adams (120), Sanchez (120), Natalia Patterson (130), Sarah Malow (140) and Brooklyn Jones (145) all finished 0-2.

One of Portas’ losses came to C-M’s Rathje and C-M’s Karoixa Snyder handed Sanchez one of her losses.

Beyer’s 2-2 day at 170 headlined PCM. She was fourth after pinning both C-M’s Audas and Newton’s Guy in their matches.

Millang was 3-1 at 135 but placed fifth because the only loss came in her first match of the day against former teammate Alauna Wells of Ogden.

Millang pinned Newton’s Booth and won 22-7 to advance to the fifth-place match. She rallied from a 14-6 deficit to win by fall against C-M’s Brenner in that bout.

Hadley Millang

Birkenholtz was sixth at 190 after winning her first match by fall in 24 seconds. Wilkerson also was 1-2 with a 24-second pin at 155 and Allie Minteer (115) was 1-2 with a first-period pin.

Ryan DeVore (105), Addison Fry (110), Courtney Cole (120), Macie Kain (145), Mia Hitze (170), Addison Pitman (190) and Davis (235) all finished 0-2.

Wilkerson lost once to C-M’s Wheeler and one of Davis’ losses came to the eventual champion Buchman of Colfax-Mingo.
