PCM girls rout Perry, edge North Mahaska

Winters records double-double in both wins

PERRY — The best game of Libby Winters’ career so far helped the PCM girls basketball team overcome a slow start against Perry on Tuesday.

The Class 3A No. 8 Mustangs led by two after one quarter and pushed it to seven at halftime but dominated the final two frames during a 56-25 road win in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play.

PCM defeated the Lady Jays for a seventh straight time despite shooting 2-of-21 from 3-point range and 12-of-21 from the free-throw line.

The Mustangs (5-1, 3-0 in the conference) outscored Perry 21-5 in the third and 12-4 in the fourth and swiped 30 steals. The Lady Jays turned the ball over 43 times in the loss.

Winters led PCM with 19 points. She also matched a career high with 15 rebounds, dished out five assists and swiped eight steals.

Winters is averaging 13.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 3.8 steals and 1.7 blocks per game through six games this winter.

Kyra Naeve totaled 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, six steals and two blocks and Tori Lindsey chipped in 13 points, four boards, five assists and five steals for the Mustangs, who committed 14 turnovers.

Lila Milani posted six points, four rebounds and six steals, Jorja Teeter added three rebounds and three steals, Camden Webb grabbed two boards and Kenna Grier made two steals.

Perry (2-3, 0-3) got seven points and 16 rebounds from Lily Myers, but the Lady Jays shot 34.4 percent from the floor, made 1-of-6 from 3 and connected on 2-of-12 from the foul line.

PCM 46, North Mahaska 43

NEW SHARON — The Mustangs started fast and held off a late rally from North Mahaska during a non-conference contest on Monday.

PCM led by double digits after one quarter and overcame 5-of-25 shooting from long range during a 46-43 road win.

Winters powered the Mustangs with 20 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and three steals. No other PCM player reached double figures, both teams turned the ball over 15 times and the Mustangs won the battle on the boards, 31-23.

PCM led 15-4 after one quarter. North Mahaska won the next three frames 13-10, 10-7 and 16-14, but it wasn’t enough to complete the rally.

North Mahaska’s two losses this season have come against 3A No. 8 PCM and 1A No. 11 Montezuma, and they’ve lost both games by a combined four points.

Lindsay totaled nine points, four rebounds, six assists and five steals for PCM, which shot 34 percent from the floor.

Naeve registered six points, four rebounds and two steals, Milani chipped in six points and two assists and Grier contributed three points and two rebounds.

Webb grabbed three rebounds and Teeter corralled two boards and the Mustangs were 5-of-9 from the foul line.

Nataliya Linder led North Mahaska (2-2) with 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

The Warhawks shot 27 percent from the floor, made 4-of-19 from 3 and connected on 11-of-16 from the foul line.
