Newton swimmers dunk East, fall to Boone

BOONE — Finn Martin was part of three wins, Hudson Meyer won the 100-yard backstroke and the Newton boys swim team swam to a victory in the 400 freestyle relay, but the Cardinals fell short against Boone on Tuesday.

Newton won every race against Des Moines East and knocked off the Scarlets 66-28, but the Toreadors got the best of the Cardinals, 55-39.

Host Boone won its matchup with Des Moines East, 79-15.

The Cardinals posted three overall wins on the night. Martin won twice as an individual and the 400 freestyle team of Martin, Drew Lamont, Meyer and Caleb Punt also scored a first-place finish.

Meyer won the 200 individual medley with a career-best time of 2 minutes, 0.4 seconds. It was the first time he competed in the event since his freshman season, but Boone placed second and third.

Martin’s other win came in the 100 butterfly, and Brody Van Zee gave Newton a 1-2 finish against Des Moines East. Martin won the race with a time of 51.47 seconds and Van Zee was third overall in a career-best 1:06.42.

Meyer’s win in the 100 backstroke was clocked in 1:01.62. Trace McClellan (1:17.13) was fourth overall, but the duo gave Newton a 1-2 finish against Des Moines East.

Ethan Comer and Punt both were second in two events. Comer was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.55 and also finished second in the 500 freestyle in 5:48.47.

It was the first time Comer swam in the 500 freestyle in his varsity career, and Blaine Brooks placed fourth in 6:13.75. The duo was 1-2 against Des Moines East.

Heath Anderson placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke and gave Newton a 1-2 finish against East with a time of 1:16.8.

Caleb Punt

Punt placed second overall and first against East in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. His time in the 50 was 23.69 and he hit the wall in the 100 in 53.35.

Meyer (2:10.91) and McClellan (2:28.4) were 3-4 overall and 1-2 against East in the 200 freestyle.

The 400 freestyle relay foursome of Martin, Lamont, Meyer and Punt won the race in 3:37.49.

The 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay took second overall and first against East.

The 200 medley relay team of Meyer, Comer, Van Zee and Punt finished in 1:50.67 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Martin, Kaden Marshall, Anderson and Comer stopped the clock in 1:38.71.

Notes: Boone won most of the junior varsity races, too, but Marshall swam to a JV win in the 100 breaststroke. He was clocked in 1:21.41.
