DES MOINES — Three players posted career highs for points, three others made their varsity debuts and the Newton girls basketball team routed Des Moines East for the second straight season on Tuesday.
The Cardinals put in a season-high point total in each of the first two quarters and turned the ball over only nine times during a 53-15 non-conference road win.

Newton led 20-7 after one quarter and outscored the Scarlets 19-6 in the second. The Cardinals held East (0-4) to two points in the second half.
Ten players entered the game for the Cardinals, who outscored the Scarlets 120-30 the past two seasons. The 53 points this season is currently a season high.
Starting point guard Payton Carkhuff missed the game due to a broken nose. Her timetable to return is not yet known, according to head girls basketball coach Jake Bennett.
Sophia Coady scored a career-high 12 points and contributed three rebounds and three assists.

Camryn Klein’s career-best 11 points came on 4-of-5 shooting and 2-of-2 from 3-point range. She also grabbed three boards.
Addy Cibula totaled nine points, 12 rebounds and two assists, Tori White contributed eight points, three rebounds and three assists and Emerson Ray tallied a career-best seven points with three rebounds, two assists and three steals in her first career varsity start.
Cibula was 5-of-7 from the free-throw line and six of her 12 boards came at the offensive end.
Brooke Garvis finished with seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks, Haleigh Bozarth grabbed a career-best five rebounds and Mackenzie Crook and Greenely Huff pulled down two boards in their varsity debuts. Karrigan Moore also made her varsity debut.

The Cardinals (3-2) shot 40.4 percent from the floor, made 4-of-11 from 3-point range and buried 12-of-18 from the free-throw line.
Newton is averaging 48.67 points per game in its three wins and 30.5 in the two losses.
