Newton bowlers sweep Knoxville at Cardinal Lanes

Cardinal girls take top four spots in individual standings

The top four individual scores in the bowling matchup between the Newton girls bowling team and Knoxville were posted by Cardinals on Tuesday.

That helped Newton stay unbeaten on the season as Gabbie Humphrey claimed another first-place finish and the Cardinals downed the Panthers 2,533 to 1,678 at Cardinal Lanes.

The Newton boys also got its first win of the season. The Cardinals grabbed three of the top four spots and defeated the Panthers 2,630 to 2,255.

The 2,533 for the girls was a season best, and the 2,630 from the boys was their second best of the season.

“It was another good day on the lanes,” Newton head bowling coach Christie Lester said. “The girls continued a successful run, and the boys team got their (first) win under their belt, which they really needed.”

Humphrey’s first-place finish included a 205 in her opening game. She rolled a 185 in the second game and finished with a 390 series.

Mackenna Burns was second with a career-best 336 series. She rolled single games of 165 and 171. Aeris Archer (305) and Braleigh Slings (300) were next in third and fourth, respectively.

Archer rolled single games of 148 and 157 and Slings turned in a 169 and a 131. Kelly Holmes (281) was sixth overall with single games of 117 and 164 and Lili Baxin (223) posted single games of 93 and 130 in eighth. Jalyssa Neer led the Newton junior varsity with a 230 series.

The Newton girls (4-0) started the Baker round with a 225. The Cardinals also rolled a 195 and a 192.

The Cardinals’ pin total so far this season is 9,619, which currently ranks third in Class 2A.

Humphrey leads the entire state with a pin total of 1,980. Holmes’ total of 1,652 ranks seventh.

Knoxville (0-4) was led by Margarette Leekley, who was fifth overall with a 283 series.

Braden Baskerville led the Newton boys with a 372 series. His single games of 184 and 188 put him second overall.

Jeremiah Killmer was third with a 355 series. He rolled single games of 161 and 194 and Carter Maki was fourth with a 342 series. Maki’s two single games were 179 and 163.

Jarret Sweeney (319) finished sixth with single games of 158 and 161, Owen Kearse (286) placed eighth with single games of 119 and a career-best 167 and Ascher Austin (270) took 10th with two individual games of 136 and 134.

The Cardinals (1-2) rolled a 243 in the third Baker game and ended the round with a 207.

Troy Binns of Knoxville (0-2) was the overall winner with a 379 series. His best game was 224.

The Newton boys JV posted a team score of 2,343 and rolled a 200 in the Baker round. That group was led by Will Buren’s 357 series. He had single games of 169 and 188.

Thaddeus Lewis (315) and Hudson Swarts (305) also cleared 300 for a series.
