Cardinal boys open conference season with road loss to Indianola

Tough shooting night plagues Newton against Bobcats

INDIANOLA — Brody Wobschall and Karter Holmes had career scoring nights for the Newton boys basketball team, but Indianola’s strong second half pushed the Indians to a 73-58 home win on Friday.

The Cardinals led by two at halftime but were outscored 22-11 in the third and 21-15 in the fourth of the Little Hawkeye Conference game.

The win snapped Newton’s four game win streak in the series. Indianola is 16-7 against the Cardinals since 2007.

Wobschall led the Cardinals with a career-high 17 points. Dawson Maki had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists, Holmes pitched in a career-best 11 points, six boards and four assists and Grant Osby totaled nine points and seven rebounds.

Isaiah Slaughter registered eight points and two steals and Micah Mattes pulled down two rebounds.

The Cardinals (1-2, 0-1 in the conference) shot 42.6 percent from the floor, made 9-of-32 from 3-point range and hit 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. Both teams turned the ball over eight times.

George Blake led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Easton McGraw totaled 18 points and five boards, and the Indians (2-0, 1-0) shot 56 percent from the floor, made 9-of-18 from 3 and connected on 10-of-18 from the line. They also out-rebounded Newton 34-21.

Marshalltown 42, Newton 33

MARSHALLTOWN — Maki put in a career-best 19 points and the Cardinals had just one turnover, but a tough shooting night plagued Newton against Marshalltown on Thursday.

The Bobcats held Newton to two points in the second and finished off the Cardinals, 42-33, thanks to a six-point surplus in the fourth.

Marshalltown’s win snapped Newton’s two-game win streak in the series. The Bobcats (2-1) are 12-7 against the Cardinals since 2007.

Slaughter posted five points, three rebounds and two assists, Wobschall totaled seven points and four boards and Tyler Thompson contributed five points and two assists.

Osby grabbed seven boards, Maki corralled four rebounds and Holmes tallied three boards.

Newton shot 27 percent from the floor, made 3-of-23 from 3 and connected on 4-of-5 from the line.
