PCM avenges earlier loss to Newton, wins L-S volleyball tournament

Mustangs sweep Cardinals two days after losing in Newton

SULLY — The Newton and PCM volleyball teams split their two matches last fall during the first week of the season.

The Mustangs downed the Cardinals at Newton’s home tournament to start the season, but Newton got redemption at the Lynnville-Sully tourney a few days later.

This year, the two teams flipped those results but each team came away with a win against each other as the Mustangs avenged their three-set loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday with a two-game sweep of them on Thursday during the Hawks’ home quadrangular.

PCM was 3-0 on the day, while Newton scored wins over the host Hawks and Twin Cedars. Lynnville-Sully’s only win came against the Sabers.

Newton and PCM played in the second match of the night, and the Mustangs scored the 21-13, 22-20 win over the Cardinals.

Isabelle Rawlins

Tori Lindsay led PCM (5-1) with 19 assists and six digs. Libby Winters put down seven kills and posted six digs, Jorja Teeter added four kills and nine digs and Addi Hudnut chipped in two assists and eight digs.

Addyson Pederson finished with five kills and two aces, Peyton Lathrum totaled five kills and two digs, Claire Van Wyk put down three kills and the Mustangs finished with a kill efficiency of .288.

PCM was 36-of-42 in serves with three aces. Lindsay served 7-of-7, while Winters and Teeter both were 6-of-6.

Newton got 10 kills from Morgan Frehse, Camryn Klein tallied 10 digs and two assists and Isabelle Rawlins posted 13 assists and four digs.

Frehse has a team-best 45 kills through six matches and Klein leads the squad with 25 digs.

Addie Ratcliff put down three kills, Addy Cibula totaled two kills, Faith Roffey chipped in four digs and Quincy Davidson collected three digs.

Newton (5-1) was 32-of-34 in serves and had a .196 kill efficiency. Rawlins served 7-of-7 and is now 52-of-52 this season. Davidson and Roffey both served 6-of-6.

PCM’s win over the host Hawks was 21-13, 21-16. Lindsay led the way with 14 assists, two kills, three digs and two aces.

Addi Hudnut

Hudnut totaled three assists and nine digs, Winters chipped in four kills, five digs and two aces, Teeter added two kills, two assists and two digs.

Lathrum put down five kills, Pederson registered four kills and three aces, Van Wyk tallied three kills and Ryan DeVore contributed two digs.

The Mustangs were 35-of-41 with eight aces and they had a kill efficiency of .222. L-S was 26-of-29 in serves with three aces.

Tatum Huyser led the Hawks (1-3) with three kills, two blocks and seven digs, while Kate Harthoorn added eight assists and six digs.

Penelope Robinson collected two kills and seven digs, Olivia Beyer produced four digs, Brilynn Tice put down three kills, Jaelynn Vander Wilt had three digs and Ava Brummel posted two kills.

PCM swept Twin Cedars 21-10, 21-15, and the Mustangs were 32-of-41 in serves with six aces. Their kill efficiency was .271.

Lindsay posted 17 assists and two aces, Lathrum put down six kills and Pederson contributed five kills and two aces to lead the way.

Winters totaled four kills and three digs, Teeter put down two kills and had three digs, Hudnut chipped in seven digs and Van Wyk finished with two kills.

Twin Cedars got four assists and four digs from Sage Hoksbergen, MJ Smith had two kills and Shyanne Evans served up two aces.

The Cardinals opened their night against Lynnville-Sully, and handed the Hawks a 21-17, 21-16 defeat.

Frehse blasted a career-best 13 kills and Rawlins totaled 20 assists, three kills and seven digs to lead the way.

Ratcliff contributed five kills, Davidson added seven digs and three aces, Roffey chipped in four digs, Klein registered three digs, Cibula had two kills and Sophie Greer tallied two digs.

Quincy Davidson

The Cardinals were 41-of-43 in serves with six aces, and they had a kill efficiency of .286. Davidson served a perfect 13-of-13. Rawlins was 7-of-7 in serves, while Klein finished 6-of-6.

Huyser collected four kills and five digs, Brooke Hardeman totaled six digs, Beyer had five digs and Harthoorn posted eight assists and two digs.

Robinson collected three kills and three digs, Brummel put down two kills and had two digs, Lori Yoder smashed three kills, Tice added three digs and Addasyn Klein and Morgan Hay each finished with two digs. Vander Wilt dished out two assists, too.

The Hawks were 26-of-27 in serves with two aces.

Brooke Hardeman

It was Newton’s fifth straight win over the Hawks, and the Cardinals are 8-1 in the series since 2013.

Newton cruised past Twin Cedars 21-10, 21-8. Rawlins led the Cardinals with 21 assists, two kills, two aces and three digs and she was 10-of-10 in serves.

Frehse totaled seven kills and two digs, Cibula collected five kills, Ratcliff and Camryn Klein each posted four kills and Ellie DeVries contributed two kills and two blocks.

Davidson, Greer, Olivia Bell and Merissa Schiebel all had two digs.

The Cardinals were 38-of-39 in serves with five aces, and their kill efficiency was .408.

Ava Brummel

Hoksbergen led Twin Cedars (1-3) with seven assists and Blayne Comstock totaled four digs.

Lynnville-Sully outscored Twin Cedars by a wide margin, but the Hawks needed three sets to down the Sabers. They won the match 21-7, 19-21, 15-9.

It was the Hawks’ ninth straight win over Twin Cedars and the second straight three-set win.

Huyser led the Hawks with a 13-kill, 12-dig double-double and Harthoorn posted 16 assists and five digs.

Addyson Pederson

Beyer chipped in 11 digs and two aces, Robinson added five digs and six aces, Hay collected five digs and Addasyn Klein totaled four digs.

Vander Wilt produced two kills and two digs, Brummel put down three kills and Hardeman totaled three digs.

Lynnville-Sully finished 50-of-54 in serves with 10 aces, while Twin Cedars was 35-of-38 with six aces.

Hoksbergen led the Sabers with seven assists, four digs and three aces.

Faith Roffey
