Newton girls dunk Williamsburg, Tipton in season opener

Cardinals win nine events in road triangular

WILLIAMSBURG — Harper Barton was part of four wins and the Newton girls swim team used nine event victories to cruise to its first triumph of the season on Thursday.

The Cardinals finished 1-2 in three events and were 1-2-3 in two of them and scored 97 points at the top of the standings at the Williamsburg triangular.

Host Williamsburg scored 54 points in second and Tipton was third with 17 points. Both the Raiders and Tigers claimed one event win.

Newton won all three relays, Barton and Reid McCloud each claimed a pair of individual wins and the Cardinals finished 1-2-3 in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races.

The Cardinals were 1-2 in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Tori White, Barton, Julia Nedder and Alexa Van Maanen won the race in 2 minutes, 0.57 seconds and McCloud, Temple Barton, Emalee Wueve and Peyton Phillips placed second in 2:11.26.

Newton’s winning 400 freestyle relay team consisted of Nedder, McCloud, Wueve and Phillips. They won the race in 4:15.28.

Alexa Van Maanen

In the 200 freestyle relay, Temple Barton, Harper Barton, Van Maanen and White scored a winning time of 1:47.17. Kimberlee Miller, Torrie Van Kley, Nilaya McConnell and Brilea Moffitt came in third in 2:12.38.

Harper Barton led a 1-2-3-5 finish in the 100 freestyle. Her winning time was 54.92 seconds. The state meet qualifying standard time is 54.55.

Temple Barton (career-best 58.41) and White (59.85) were 2-3 in the event, and Miller (career-best 1:03.54) was a non-scoring fifth.

Temple Barton led a 1-2-3-5 finish in the 200 freestyle. She won the race in a career-best 2:08.6. Wueve (2:22.87) and Miller (2:24.06) placed 2-3 and Nedder (2:32.23) was a non-scoring fifth.

Julia Nedder

Harper Barton’s other win came in the 50 freestyle. She won the race in 25.13 and the qualifying standard time is 24.92. Williamsburg placed 2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 in the event.

Nedder was the 100 butterfly winner. She was clocked in 1:13.02.

McCloud claimed her first-ever prep wins in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. McCloud won the 500 freestyle in 5:38.11 and Phillips took second in 6:42.51.

McCloud (1:04.52) edged White (1:04.93) in the 100 backstroke for a 1-2 finish and Wueve (1:14.66) was fourth.

Reid McCloud

Van Maanen came in second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:43.15 and Van Kley placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:33.50. Williamsburg took the top three spots in the breaststroke.

Notes: It was the varsity debuts for both McCloud and Van Kley.
