L-S volleyball opens season with narrow loss to BGM

Hawks fall to Bears in four sets

BROOKLYN — BGM snapped a three-match losing streak against the Lynnville-Sully volleyball team on Tuesday.

The Hawks opened their season on the road against South Iowa Cedar League rival BGM but came home with a 25-23, 20-25, 26-24, 25-19 loss to the Bears in a non-conference contest.

The matchup was originally scheduled to be part of a quadrangular, but the other teams dropped out.

Two of BGM’s wins came by the minimum two points. The Hawks, who are 17-11 against BGM since 2008, were only outscored by five points in the four-set loss.

Kate Harthoorn’s double-double led Lynnville-Sully. She finished with 17 assists, 23 digs, three kills and three blocks and was a perfect 13-of-13 in serves.

Tatum Huyser totaled six kills, four assists and 37 digs, Brilynn Tice added six kills, three digs and three aces and Ava Brummel chipped in six kills and seven digs.

Brooke Hardeman collected two kills, 18 digs and three aces, Penelope Robinson had three kills and seven digs, Olivia Beyer registered 15 digs and two aces and Addasyn Klein finished with seven digs.

Morgan Hay also tallied five digs, Addison Collum dished out four assists, Jaelynn Vander Wilt had two assists and two digs and Lori Yoder collected two kills and two digs.

Tice, Hardeman and Beyer all made their first career varsity starts, and it was the varsity debuts for Vander Wilt, Yoder, Klein, Beyer and Hay.

The Hawks (0-1) finished 76-of-82 in serves with 11 aces. Huyser served 11-of-11, Beyer was 13-of-13 and Hardeman finished 18-of-19.
