HUXLEY — Morgan Frehse was part of two wins, but the Newton tennis team dropped a close match to Ballard on Wednesday.
The Cardinals lost the non-conference matchup, 6-5, and all six losses came in three sets.

Newton led 4-2 after singles following wins from Frehse, Brooklyn Sterling, Sloan Brodersen and Ava Williams. But only Frehse and Kaetlin McPartlin claimed a win in doubles.
Frehse won 4-0, 4-1 at No. 1 singles, Sterling scored a pair of 4-2 wins at No. 2 singles, Brodersen posted a 5-3, 4-1 win at No. 3 singles and Williams edged her opponent 4-1, 1-4, 1-0 (7-5) at No. 5 singles.
It was the first career varsity singles win for Williams.

Frehse and McPartlin scored a 4-0, 5-3 win at No. 2 doubles, but Ballard (2-3) rallied past the Cardinals (0-3) with a big finish.
Camryn Andrew and McPartlin both lost in three sets in singles, while Sterling and Brodersen, Williams and Kenzly Brant, Andrew and Makenzie Clark and Alieya Owen and Haylie Milheiser all lost in three sets. Only Owen and Milheiser trailed after the first set in doubles.
