Newton’s Bauer, Milheiser earn all-LHC baseball recognition

Newton senior Skyler Milheiser did not have the minimum number of at-bats required on Bound to make the list for top batting averages in the Little Hawkeye Conference this season.

Milheiser’s season was cut short due to an injury. But his .400 batting average in 25 at-bats was the third-best in the conference.

Senior Cade Bauer led the Newton baseball team in hits and total bases and ranked in the top 10 in the league in stolen bases.

Both Cardinals were recognized on the all-conference team recently. They were honorable mention selections in their final seasons.

All-conference recognition is based on statistics inside conference play only.

The teams were released to the public after Pella won the Class 3A baseball title on Friday.

Bauer played in all 18 conference games and batted .250 with an on-base percentage of .276. He led the Cardinals with 14 hits and 19 total bases and added six runs, one homer, five RBIs and one walk and he was hit by one pitch.

Bauer’s six steals ranked tied for seventh in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Milheiser played in nine of the 18 games. He batted .400 and had an OBP of .464. His 10 hits and 13 total bases ranked second on the team, and he finished with two runs, one double, one triple, two RBIs and three walks.

The right-handed Milheiser even took some of his at-bats from the left side of the plate late in his season due to the injury he sustained on May 30.

Milheiser finished with zero errors in 17 chances.
