L-S softball edges Twin Cedars in extra innings

Hawks lose to Iowa Valley in regional preview

SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully softball team scored first but needed a pair of crooked numbers to overcome two deficits and then scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to down Twin Cedars, 8-7, during a non-conference home contest.

The Hawks led 1-0 after one inning and 2-0 after two, but Twin Cedars scored four in the fourth and three in the sixth to grab two separate leads.

Lynnville-Sully tied the game at 4-all with a two-run fifth and then tied the score at 7-all after a three-run sixth. The Hawks out-hit the Sabers 13-9, and the hosts committed three errors on Tuesday.

Kate Harthoorn and Alaina Roberts both had three hits to lead the offense, while Olivia Beyer, Peyton Sharp and Olivia Norrish contributed two hits each.

Harthoorn doubled, scored three runs, totaled two RBIs, walked once and stole one base. Harthoorn leads the Hawks with 12 walks.

Roberts tallied two RBIs, Beyer scored two runs, walked once and stole three bases, Sharp doubled, had two RBIs and stole one base and Norrish finished with one run and two steals.

Sharp has a team-best 60 total bases and is batting a team-best .487 and Norrish has a team-most 20 steals.

Sophia Squires contributed the other hit, Ava Brummel collected one RBI, Emma Johnson was hit by a pitch and scored one run and Brooklyn Vos scored one run.

Harthoorn (9-16) got the pitching win after allowing seven runs — two earned — on nine hits and three walks with three strikeouts in eight innings.

Twin Cedars (4-20) has lost six straight games.

Iowa Valley 19, Lynnville-Sully 5

MARENGO — In a preview of a first-round regional matchup, Iowa Valley used two big innings to defeat Lynnville-Sully on Wednesday.

The Hawks scored once in the third and four in the fourth but lost to the Tigers 19-5 in the South Iowa Cedar League finale for both teams.

Iowa Valley scored nine in the second and 10 in the third to end the game early. The Hawks were out-hit 8-5 and they committed eight errors.

Lynnville-Sully (9-17, 7-10 in the SICL) is 17-7 against Iowa Valley since 2009, but the two teams split the season series and the victory was the most lopsided for the Tigers during that stretch.

Squires led the offense with one double, one run and two RBIs, Harthoorn totaled one hit and one RBI and Sharp and Norrish each collected one hit and one run.

Hay doubled, Brummel walked and scored one run, Johnson finished with one RBI and Katelyn Nikkel scored one run. Hay’s 15 doubles lead the squad.

Johnson (0-1) pitched all three innings in the circle for L-S. She took the loss after allowing 19 runs — five earned — on eight hits, six walks and four hit batters.

Jakeira Hay

Skyler Hoyt (11-11, 8-8) had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Tigers, while Izzy Kriegel homered and Clara Fry pitched in two walks and five RBIs.

The two teams open the Class 1A Region 4 tournament against each other at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Sully.

Melcher-Dallas 7, Lynnville-Sully 6

MELCHER-DALLAS — The Hawks laced four doubles and had one triple, but Melcher-Dallas turned away its visitors, 7-6, during a non-conference contest on June 30.

Both teams scored twice in the first, but the Saints added two in the second and two in the sixth to grab an advantage. L-S rallied with three in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.

Melcher-Dallas had 11 hits and two errors and scored one run in the fourth and Lynnville-Sully produced 11 hits and one error and scored once in the third.

Olivia Norrish

Roberts had two doubles, one triple and three runs, Hay had two hits, one double and two RBIs, Norrish produced two hits, one RBI and two steals and Harthoorn chipped in two hits and one run. Hay leads the squad with 21 RBIs.

Sharp doubled and had two RBIs, Beyer totaled one hit and one run, Brummel walked once and Nikkel scored one run. Sharp leads the Hawks with 25 runs.

Melcher-Dallas (8-11) got three hits and two runs from Hayden Bronson. The Saints laced five doubles in the win.

It was Melcher-Dallas’ first win over the Hawks in five tries since 2009.

Grand View Christian 9, Lynnville-Sully 1

DES MOINES — A nine-run inning was all the Thunder needed during a 9-1 win in non-conference action on July 3.

Grand View Christian scored nine runs in the second and took advantage of two Hawk errors in the home win at North Des Moines Girls Softball Complex.

Brummel led the Hawks with two hits and one RBI, Nikkel scored one run and Harthoorn, Hay, Sharp and Norrish all registered one hit.

Harthoorn took the pitching loss after surrendering nine runs — four earned — on six hits and four walks in four innings.

Addie Hackett struck out six and allowed one earned run in her three innings in the circle for Grand View Christian, which improved to 21-6.
