WINTERSET — A four-run fourth inning put the Cardinals in front, but the Newton baseball team couldn’t hold the narrow advantage and Winterset won the non-conference game, 5-4, in 10 innings on Friday.
Cade Bauer led the Cardinals with three hits and two RBIs and a trio of Newton pitchers struck out 12 and allowed no walks in the loss.

Winterset led 2-0 after three but trailed 4-2 after five. The Huskies scored twice in the sixth to tie it and then walked it off with the winning run it the 10th.
It was Winterset’s second straight one-run win, and the Cardinals have three one-run losses this summer.
Mason Mendez finished with two hits, Lane Rozendaal doubled, had one RBI and scored one run and Dakota Winkleman registered one hit and one RBI.
Kreytein Wickliffe walked twice, Derek Wermager walked and was hit by a pitch, Gabe Otto was hit by a pitch and scored one run, Landry Rausch and Carter Lehrman each walked once and Aaden Grimm and Isaiah Slaughter both scored one run.
Bauer leads the Cardinals (4-23) with 32 hits, 16 RBIs and 41 total bases, Wermager has been hit by a team-most five pitches and Rausch has a team-best 12 walks.

Winkleman started on the mound but wasn’t involved in the decision. He allowed four runs — three earned — on six hits and one hit batter in six innings. He struck out seven.
Wermager pitched 3 1/3 innings and surrendered no earned runs on one hit and one hit batter with five strikeouts.
Otto (2-6) took the loss after giving up one earned run on two hits in 1/3 of an inning.
Winterset (12-10) was led by Reed Smith, who had three hits and two runs. Wyatt Swanson contributed two hits and Max Breeding struck out 11 batters and allowed no earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Newton baseball loses twice to Bettendorf at Brent Prange Classic
ALLEMAN — A strong day at the plate from Bauer was not enough for the Cardinals during a neutral site doubleheader against Bettendorf on Saturday.

Newton scored first in the opener but lost 10-6, and the Bulldogs used a five-run fourth to win the second game 10-3 at the Brent Prange Classic.
The two teams played both games at North Polk High School. The Cardinals registered 12 hits and seven errors in the two non-conference contests.
The Cardinals scored twice in the first inning of the opener and took a 4-1 lead with a two-run third.
Bettendorf (20-9) went in front for good with a four-run fourth and then scored three in the fifth. Newton added single runs in the fourth and sixth, but it wasn’t enough.
Newton finished with seven hits and five errors. Bauer had three hits, one double, two runs and one steal in the loss. He leads the Cardinals with 16 runs and 14 stolen bases.

Creighton Andrew posted one hit, one run and one RBI and he was hit by one pitch, Drew Bauer tallied one hit and two RBIs and he was hit by one pitch, Otto contributed one hit, one run and one walk and Rausch totaled one hit, one run and one walk.
Wermager walked and had one RBI, Wickliffe walked and scored one run and Ian White was hit by a pitch and scored one run in a pinch-hit at-bat. Josh Lampe also walked in his pinch-hit at-bat.
Otto started on the mound and took the loss after allowing eight runs — five earned — on eight hits, two walks and two hit batters in four innings. He struck out one.
Rausch gave up one hit and hit one batter in his one inning and Cade Bauer allowed two earned runs on three hits in his inning of relief.
The Bulldogs finished with 13 hits and three errors. Max Davison totaled three hits and two RBIs, Wrigley Matthys chipped in two hits, two runs and two steals and Drew Reed contributed two hits and two runs.

Bettendorf scored two runs in the third inning of the second game and then piled up five runs in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Newton closed the gap to 7-3 after six, but the Bulldogs added three in the top of the seventh. Newton was out-hit 13-5, and the Cardinals committed the only two errors of the game.
Cade Bauer finished with two hits, one double and two RBIs. Grimm doubled and scored one run, Winkleman finished with one hit and was hit by one pitch and Connor Swihart had the other hit in a pinch-hit at-bat.
It was the first career varsity hit for Grimm. Rozendaal walked, Rausch was hit by a pitch and Slaughter scored one run.
Rayce Sieler was hit by a pitch and scored one run and Jesse Miller walked once in their pinch-hit at-bats. It was the first career varsity hit by pitch and run for Sieler and first career varsity walk for Miller.

Miller also pitched in a varsity game for the first time. He allowed two runs — one earned — on two hits and one hit batter in two innings of relief.
Lehrman (1-6) took the pitching loss after allowing seven runs — five earned — on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
Andrew pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up three hits and one walk.
Matthys led Bettendorf with three hits, two doubles, two runs and four RBIs.
