Skyler Milheiser had two of the team’s three hits and Dakota Winkleman tossed five strong innings on the mound, but the Newton baseball team fell short against Indianola during a weather-shortened matchup at H.A. Lynn Baseball Field.
The Cardinals rallied to tie the game in the fourth, but Indianola scored the season sweep following a 2-1 victory during Little Hawkeye Conference play.

The game ended after five innings due to rain and lightning in the area. The Indians out-hit Newton 5-3, and the Cardinals committed the game’s only error.
It was the sixth straight win for Indianola over Newton, but the Cardinals fell 2-0 and 2-1 this season.
The Indians (20-4, 12-3 in the conference) led 1-0 after scoring a run in the third. Newton tied it with its run in the fourth.
Milheiser had two hits to lead the Cardinals (4-20, 2-16), while Carter Lehrman walked once and was hit by a pitch.
Lane Rozendaal collected the other hit, Landry Rausch walked once and scored one run and Kreytein Wickliffe and Drew Bauer each walked once. Mason Mendez was hit by a pitch and Gabe Otto stole one base.

Winkleman (0-2) took the pitching loss but allowed just one earned run on three hits and one hit batter in five innings. He struck out four.
Bo Blake had one hit, one run and one steal and Andrew DeWall contributed two RBIs to lead the Indians.
The Cardinals were scheduled to play at Clarke on Tuesday, but the non-conference game was postponed to July 7 due to rain and wet field conditions.
DCG sweeps Cardinals in LHC doubleheader
DALLAS CENTER — The Cardinals collected seven hits over two games against Dallas Center-Grimes on Wednesday, and Newton dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Mustangs.
DCG put up crooked numbers in the first inning of both games, and the hosts won 11-1 in five and 15-2 in five to complete the season sweep. The Mustangs have won 12 straight against Newton.

Rozendaal led Newton in the opener with two hits, one double and one RBI. Derek Wermager tripled and scored one run, Cade Bauer had one hit and Mendez drew one walk.
Creighton Andrew (0-5) took the loss on the mound after allowing six earned runs on six hits and five walks in 2 2/3 innings.
Cade Bauer tossed 1 2/3 innings and surrendered five runs — two earned — on four hits and two walks. He fanned two.
The Mustangs led the opener 3-0 after one and pushed the margin to 6-0 after three.
In the nightcap, DCG (15-8, 11-5) scored four in the first, two in the second, five in the third and four in the fourth to end the game early. The Cardinals were plagued by five errors.
Andrew led the Cardinals’ offense with one hit, two walks, one run and one steal. Cade Bauer and Wickliffe each tallied one hit, Otto was hit by a pitch and scored one run, Mendez walked once and was hit by a pitch and Rausch walked for a team-best 10th time this season. Winkleman also was hit by a pitch.

The Cardinals scored both of their runs in the third. Bauer leads Newton with 24 hits and 31 total bases this summer.
Lehrman took the pitching loss after allowing seven runs — six earned — on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.
Otto allowed four earned runs on four walks and Wermager surrendered three earned runs on four hits and one walk in 2/3 of an inning.
Ian White also got two outs. He allowed one unearned run on one hit and struck out one.
