L-S softball shuts out English Valleys, falls twice at home tournament

SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully softball team scored first and used a big inning late to dethrone English Valleys on Friday.

The Hawks snapped a two-game skid with an 8-0 win over the Bears during a South Iowa Cedar League contest.

Alaina Roberts had three hits to lead the Hawks, who out-hit their visitors 13-3. English Valleys also had three errors.

Lynnville-Sully (6-8, 4-4 in the conference) led 1-0 through four innings but plated seven in the fifth to end the game early.

Roberts had two doubles, two runs and one steal to lead the Hawks, while Kate Harthoorn and Sophia Squires each collected two hits.

Harthoorn tallied one run and two RBIs, Squires totaled one run and one RBI and Olivia Beyer finished with one hit, one run, one RBI and one walk.

Jakeira Hay doubled and walked once, Peyton Sharp doubled and stole one base and Ava Brummel finished with one hit, one run and two RBIs.

Squires and Brummel have a team-best 13 RBIs, Hay has a team-best nine walks and Sharp is batting a team-high .522 with a team-most 39 total bases.

Olivia Norrish had one hit and is now hitting .472. Brooke Hardeman chipped in one hit and one run and Katelyn Nikkel scored one run.

Harthoorn (6-8) earned the win in the circle after allowing no earned runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout in five innings.

Lynnville-Sully is 21-3 against English Valleys (3-11, 3-9) since 2009, but the win snapped a two-game losing streak in the series.

Hawks fall twice at home tournament

SULLY — A 90-minute steadfast time limit plagued the Hawks during a narrow loss to Moravia during their home tournament on Saturday.

Lynnville-Sully led 5-0 after one and 6-3 after four, but Moravia plated seven runs in the top of the fifth and held on to win 10-9. Lynnville-Sully had a runner on third base with just one out when the game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Hawks also fell 5-2 to Des Moines Christian in the final game of the tournament.

Moravia lost 14-3 to Des Moines Christian in the middle game of the round-robin event.

Roberts had three hits, one triple, two runs, one RBI and one steal to lead the Hawks against Moravia.

Harthoorn, Sharp and Norrish all had two hits, Harthoorn added two runs and one walk, Sharp tripled, scored one run and had one RBI and Norrish scored two runs.

Hay added one hit, one walk and one RBI, Brummel doubled, scored two runs, totaled one RBI and walked once and Beyer and Brooklyn Vos each chipped in one hit. Squires drove in two runs.

Harthoorn took the pitching loss after allowing 10 runs — four earned — on 11 hits and one walk. She fanned three in six innings.

The Hawks out-hit Moravia 13-11, but Lynnville-Sully was plagued by eight errors. The Mohawks (4-18) had five errors.

Layla Ewing and Hadlee Bedford each had three hits to lead Moravia.

Class 3A Des Moines Christian used a two-run second and a two-run third to grab an early advantage and never trailed in the 5-2 win.

Lynnville-Sully scored twice in the third, but it wasn’t enough. The game ended after six innings due to the 90-minute time limit.

Harthoorn, Hay and Squires all had two hits. Harthoorn added one run and one steal and she was hit by one pitch, Hay doubled twice and Squires walked once.

Roberts tallied one hit, one run and one steal, Norrish posted one hit and one steal and Sharp totaled one RBI.

Harthoorn took the pitching loss after surrendering five runs — four earned — on nine hits and one walk with one strikeout in six innings.

Olivia Wolven and Hailey Gaiser each collected two hits to lead Des Moines Christian, which improved to 10-7.

The Lions out-hit the Hawks 10-8 and both teams committed two errors.

Sophia Squires

Pella Christian 15, Lynnville-Sully 2

SULLY — Class 2A Pella Christian slugged four home runs and put up a crooked number in each inning during a 15-2 non-conference road win over the Hawks on June 12.

The Eagles led 3-2 after one but scored five in the second and fourth and two in the third to end the game early.

Squires doubled and had two RBIs to lead the hosts. Sharp and Roberts totaled one hit and one run and Norrish walked once to complete the offense.

Harthoorn took the pitching loss after allowing 15 runs — 12 earned — on 11 hits, six walks and one hit batter in four innings.

It was the third straight win in the series for the Eagles, who are now 3-3 against Lynnville-Sully since 2012.

Faith Kacmarynski led the Eagles (5-11) with two homers, three runs, six RBIs and two walks.

Chloe Snyder had three hits, one homer and three RBIs and Brynn Roozeboom totaled three hits, one homer and four RBIs.
