SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully softball team only had one more hit than Belle Plaine on June 6.
But the Hawks walked four times and were hit by two pitches and a fast start propelled L-S to a 10-1 home win over the Lady Plainsmen during South Iowa Cedar League action.

Lynnville-Sully ended the game early with a three-run fourth. The Hawks, who are 4-2 since starting 1-3, took advantage of four Belle Plaine errors.
“It was slow there for a while because you can only really meet once a week,” said Lynnville-Sully head softball coach Jordan Ely, who took over the program in January. “Kids playing other sports and with so many of our girls doing well in track, we really only had four practices with everyone before we started playing games.
“Once we got everyone and track season was over, and it was an awesome season for them, things started clicking and moving forward a lot faster for us.”
Ava Brummel had two hits, doubled, scored two runs and had two RBIs to lead the Hawks.
Kate Harthoorn added one hit, one run, one RBI and one steal and she was hit by one pitch. She leads the Hawks with 13 steals this summer.
Alaina Roberts finished with one hit, scored two runs and stole two bases and she was hit by a pitch, Olivia Norrish tallied one hit, two runs, one RBI, one walk and two steals and Emma Johnson doubled and had three RBIs.
Peyton Sharp doubled and totaled one RBI, Jakeira Hay walked twice, Katelyn Nikkel scored two runs, Sophia Squires scored one run and had one RBI and Brooke Hardeman walked once.
Hay leads the Hawks (5-5, 3-4 in the SICL) with seven walks, Sharp has scored a team-best 15 runs and Brummel has a team-high six doubles and a team-most 10 RBIs.

Harthoorn got the pitching win after allowing one earned run on six hits over five innings. She struck out three and improved to 5-5 in the circle.
Claire Neuhaus and Eva Brannaman led Belle Plaine (0-13, 0-9) with two hits each.
BGM 7, Lynnville-Sully 3
BROOKLYN — Sharp hit her first home run of the season and Roberts and Squires both had two hits, but the Hawks gave up a late lead during a 7-3 road loss to BGM on June 9.
The Hawks trailed 2-0 after three but led 3-2 after five in the SICL contest. BGM scored five in the sixth to rally past its rivals. L-S was plagued by four errors.
The Hawks are 30-5 against BGM since 2009, but they were out-hit 9-6 in the latest meeting.
Roberts had two hits, doubled, scored one run and had one RBI, Sharp homered and had two RBIs and Norrish tallied one hit, one run and one steal.
Squires had two hits and Harthoorn walked twice. Sharp leads the Hawks with a .588 batting average.
Harthoorn took the pitching loss after surrendering seven runs — one earned — on 13 hits and two walks in six innings.

Cara Ament had two hits at the plate and fanned 13 Hawks over seven innings in the circle to lead BGM, which improved to 7-3 and 6-2 in the SICL.
Macey Heishman finished with two hits, Ana Coleman scored two runs and Mya Beck contributed three RBIs for the Bears.
Hawks split pair at Pleasantville tournament
PLEASANTVILLE — Seven different players had at least one hit, Hay reached base three times and Nikkel scored three runs during the Hawks’ 19-2 win over Belle Plaine on June 7.
Lynnville-Sully plated six in the first, nine in the second and two each in the third and fourth to end the game early. The Hawks also lost 9-3 to host Pleasantville.
The 19 runs against Belle Plaine are the most the Hawks have scored since defeating Keota 22-0 on June 9, 2017. L-S also improved to 22-2 against Belle Plaine since 2009.
“Everyone in our conference has someone who throws hard,” Ely said. “That’s what we’ve been used to. We have been timing them up better lately. We’ve had 10 hits in every game this year except North Mahaska I think.”
Sharp led the Hawks with two hits, one triple, four runs, one RBI and two steals and she was hit by two pitches.
Harthoorn totaled one hit, two walks, two runs and three steals, Norrish had one hit, three runs, two RBIs and two steals and Roberts posted one hit, one run, one RBI and two steals.

Johnson doubled, scored two runs, had three RBIs, walked once and stole two bases, Brummel added one hit, one run, one RBI and one walk and Hardeman chipped in one hit, one run, two RBIs and one steal and she was hit by one pitch and Hay walked twice, was hit by one pitch and scored one run.
Squires totaled two RBIs, Nikkel scored three runs and stole two bases and Bristol Hardeman scored one run and stole one base.
The Hawks finished with eight hits, six walks, four hit by pitches and 14 steals. L-S out-hit the Lady Plainsmen 8-4.
Harthoorn got the win in the circle after allowing two earned runs on four hits and struck out two in three innings.
Johnson made her varsity pitching debut and allowed no runs and no hits.
Pleasantville (7-4) scored all nine of its runs in the bottom of the sixth and downed the Hawks 9-3.
L-S led 2-0 after scoring two runs in the top of the sixth and then added one in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough. Both teams had 11 hits and committed four errors.
Sharp, Brummel and Squires all had three hits at the plate to lead L-S. Brummel doubled, had two RBIs and stole one base, Squires doubled and had one RBI and Sharp scored one run.
Roberts doubled and scored one run, Norrish tallied one hit, Nikkel scored one run and Hay and Brooke Hardeman each stole one base.

Lynnville-Sully 4, Iowa Valley 3
SULLY — The Hawks scored first, lost the lead in the second and scored one run in their final at-bat to down Iowa Valley in walk-off fashion on June 4.
Lynnville-Sully led the SICL contest 2-0 after one, trailed 3-2 after two and plated one in the fifth to tie the Tigers (3-6, 3-5) at 3-all.
The Hawks out-hit Iowa Valley 12-9, and L-S took advantage of seven Tiger errors.
“It’s starting to click for them,” Ely said. “The fundamentals were lacking when I showed up in January for the offseason workouts.”
Sharp and Brummel each registered four hits. Sharp laced three doubles and scored three runs and Brummel doubled, stole one base and had two RBIs and Harthoorn, Hay, Roberts and Norrish all tallied one hit.
Harthoorn and Nikkel each stole one base, Hay totaled one RBI and Roberts scored one run.

Maggie Kriegel had two hits and scored one run and Mallory Hauschilt totaled two hits, one run and one RBI to lead Iowa Valley.
Lynnville-Sully 12, Colfax-Mingo 10
SULLY — The Hawks scored seven runs in the fifth to rally past Colfax-Mingo on May 30.
Lynnville-Sully trailed 1-0 after one, 3-2 after two and 9-4 after three but rallied with a single run in the fourth and seven in the fifth.
The Tigerhawks plated one in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to complete the rally.
The Hawks out-hit the Tigerhawks 16-13 and won the game despite seven errors. Colfax-Mingo committed four errors.
The Tigerhawks are 11-9 against L-S since 2016, but the Hawks claimed their fourth straight win in the series.
Eight Hawks totaled at least one hit and seven had two or more in the SICL home win.

Brooke Hardeman led the Hawks with three hits, one double, two runs, two RBIs and three steals, Brummel laced two doubles, scored two runs and had one RBI, Norrish finished with two hits, two runs, two steals and one RBI and Sharp doubled, tripled, scored one run and totaled three RBIs.
Olivia Beyer had two hits, one double, one run and two RBIs, Harthoorn registered two hits, one run and two steals and Hay collected two hits, one double and one RBI.
Squires posted one hit and one RBI, Roberts walked once and scored one run and Nikkel crossed the plate twice. The Hawks stole seven bases in the victory.
Harthoorn earned the pitching win after surrendering 10 runs — six earned — on 14 hits and six walks in seven innings. She struck out three.
Brianna Freerksen led Colfax-Mingo (1-8, 1-7) with three hits, two doubles, three runs, three RBIs and three steals.
North Mahaska 11, Lynnville-Sully 1
NEW SHARON — The Hawks fell behind early and never recovered during an 11-1 loss to North Mahaska on May 28.
L-S scored first, but the Warhawks plated eight runs in the bottom of the frame and added two in the third and one in the fourth to end the night early.
L-S is 25-10 against North Mahaska since 2009, but the Warhawks have won five straight in the series and the 10-run margin was the biggest during that stretch.

Hay led the Hawks with two hits, one double and one RBI. Brooke Hardeman doubled, Sharp had one hit and one run, Squires pitched in one hit and two steals and Norrish walked once.
Harthoorn took the loss after allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits and three walks. She struck out one in three innings.
Regan Grewe led North Mahaska (11-2, 8-1) with a homer, a double and two RBIs. She also allowed only one earned run and struck out five in the circle.
The Warhawks finished with 14 hits and seven steals. L-S committed two errors and had seven hits.
Montezuma 9, Lynnville-Sully 4
MONTEZUMA — The Hawks scored first again but couldn’t keep the Bravettes away from the big inning as Montezuma rallied for a 9-4 road victory in the season opener for both teams on May 27.
The game was tied at 1-all after one, but Montezuma took a 3-1 advantage after two and then scored one in the fourth and five in the fifth to pull away.
Lynnville-Sully scored once in each of the final three frames, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.
Montezuma out-hit the Hawks 12-10, and L-S had four of the game’s seven errors.

The Hawks are 25-7 against Montezuma (3-4, 3-4) since 2010, but the Bravettes have won four straight in the series.

The other hits came from Brummel and Squires and Hay, Beyer and Brooke Hardeman all walked once. Squires drove in one run and Nikkel scored once and stole one base.

Chloe Snook, Ellen Cook, Sydnee Burgess, Leah Urfer and Lily Ferry all had two hits for Montezuma. Ferry scored three runs and Urfer struck out eight over seven innings in the circle.
