State-ranked Hawks rally past rival BGM

Lynnville-Sully baseball scores three runs in the seventh to down host Bears

BROOKLYN — The Lynnville-Sully baseball team passed its biggest test of the season so far when it rallied past BGM during South Iowa Cedar League action on Monday.

The Class 1A No. 6 Hawks remained unbeaten following a 3-1 win over the host Bears.

Lynnville-Sully trailed 1-0 through six frames but scored three in the top of the seventh for the come-from-behind win. The Hawks overcame a season-high four errors.

The two-run margin was the closest game in the series since BGM won 3-2 back in 2021. Both teams had three hits, and the Bears committed two errors.

Carson Maston doubled to start the seventh-inning rally and also pitch into the seventh inning and struck out 14 Bears.

Maston was forced out of the game due to pitch count with one out in the seventh. He allowed one unearned run on two hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings.

Maston improved to 5-0 with an earned run average of .24. His 58 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings leads 1A.

Matthew Mintle

Trace Carlson got his first career varsity save after getting the final two outs by way of strikeout. His earned run average is 0.00 after 9 1/3 innings.

Jack Bowlin had one hit and scored one run, Matthew Mintle tallied one hit and one RBI and Terran Gosselink and JD Richards both walked once and stole one base.

Wyatt Mathis walked, Gavin Olea totaled one RBI and Ethan Dunsbergen and Gavin Fisk both scored one run.

Beau Burns led BGM (6-4, 5-1) with one hit and one run and Cayson Achenback walked twice and stole one base.

Jacksyn Bullers was pulled after 6 2/3 innings and 102 pitches. He allowed three earned runs on three hits and three walks and struck out eight.

Lynnville-Sully 9, Albia 1

SULLY — Five Hawks registered at least two hits and Bowlin tossed an 85-pitch complete game during Lynnville-Sully’s 9-1 home win over Albia on Tuesday.

The Hawks broke open a scoreless game with a four-run third and pulled away with five runs in their final three at-bats of the non-conference contest.

Bowlin (3-0) allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters in seven innings. He also was hit by two pitches and had one RBI at the plate.

Connor Deal led the offense with three hits, one run and one steal and Richards, Mintle, Brody Borg and Lannon Montgomery all had two hits.

Richards collected three RBIs and was hit by one pitch, Montgomery doubled and scored one run and Mintle doubled, scored one run and had two RBIs.

Borg is batting a team-best .409 and Montgomery leads the Hawks with 16 runs and 20 total bases.

Gosselink was hit by a pitch, scored one run and stole one base, Maston totaled one hit and one RBI and Olea scored one run and had one RBI. Gosselink leads L-S with six hit by pitches.

Colton Alberts scored two runs and Mathis and Fisk both scored one run.

Albia (4-8) got one hit and one run from Bryson Reed. The Blue Demons, who have lost seven straight games, were out-hit 12-2 and they committed three errors.
