Limited to two hits at the plate, the Newton baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Class 3A No. 5 Pella on Monday.
The Cardinals fell behind early in both games against the Dutch and never recovered during 12-1 and 11-0 losses at H.A. Lynn Baseball Field.

Newton had one hit and three errors in each game. The second game of the Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader lasted only five innings as Pella scored five in the first, one in the second and fourth and four in the fifth.
Derek Wermager had the Cardinals’ only hit in the opener. Mason Mendez also walked, Qhjuan Coley scored the run and Cade Bauer and Dakota Winkleman each stole one base.
Newton (3-6, 1-4 in the conference) used three pitchers in each game. Bauer (0-1) pitched the first three innings of Game 1 and allowed three runs — zero earned — on four hits, one walk and one hit batter. He took the loss and fanned two.

Carter Lehrman allowed six earned runs on five hits, three walks and three hit batters in 2 1/3 innings. He struck out three.
Wermager tossed 1 2/3 innings and surrendered three earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Pella (7-3, 3-2) got three hits, two runs and two RBIs from Hayes Lautenbach. The Dutch cranked out 11 hits, stole eight bases and committed two errors.
Teagan Hoekstra (1-0) made his first start of the season and allowed no earned runs on one hit and he struck out six in five innings.

Lane Rozendaal had Newton’s only hit in the nightcap. Creighton Andrew and Drew Bauer walked once and Cade Bauer was hit by a pitch.
Rozendaal, Cade Bauer and Drew Bauer all stole one base.
Pella out-hit Newton 7-1 in Game 2, and Newton committed three errors.
Gabe Otto (2-2) was the losing pitcher after allowing six runs — three earned — on four hits and five walks in three innings.

Winkleman tossed 1 2/3 innings and surrendered two runs — one earned — on no hits, three walks and one hit batter. He fanned two.
Landry Rausch got one out by strikeout but allowed three runs — one earned — on two hits and one walk.
