Baxter softball falls to trio of Iowa Star South foes

Collins-Maxwell, BCLUW continue dominance of Bolts

COLLINS — Caydence Sulzle had two RBIs, Camden Moffit drew two walks and Emileigh Beals stole two bases in her varsity debut, but the Baxter softball team fell 15-3 to Class 1A No. 11 Collins-Maxwell on Tuesday.

The Bolts lost their season opener despite scoring first in the Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.

The Spartans scored five runs in the first and ended the game early with an eight-run fourth frame.

Camden Moffit

Sulzle led the offense with a double, two RBIs and one steal. Beals had one hit, one run and two steals, Moffit walked twice and stole one base and Lillian Grunstead walked once, scored one run and stole one base.

The Bolts (0-3, 0-3 in the conference) had more errors (4) than hits (3) in the loss. Savannah Frasher had the other, Madison Jochems walked once and scored one run, Mallory Bottorff posted one RBI and Brylea Nicholson stole one base.

Avery Wonders pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed five runs — two earned — on three hits and two walks.

Jochems tossed 2 1/3 innings and surrendered six runs — five earned — on three hits and seven walks. She fanned two.

Jayden Peters led Collins-Maxwell (4-0, 4-0) three hits, three runs, one homer, five RBIs and four steals. She also was the winning pitcher.

North Tama 12, Baxter 2

BAXTER — The game was tied at 2-all after one but North Tama plated 10 runs in the third and ended things early during a 12-2 road win in Iowa Star Conference South Division play on Wednesday.

The Redhawks (1-2, 1-2) out-hit the Bolts 7-4. They were led by Faith Dvorak’s two hits, three runs and two RBIs.

Avery Wonders

Bottorff led Baxter with a double, one RBI, one walk and one steal. Jochems had one hit, one run and one steal, Sulze posted one hit and one steal, Klaire Shanks walked once and scored one run and Hannah Huffaker tallied the other hit. Moffit also drew one walk.

Shanks took the loss in the circle after allowing eight runs — five earned — on four hits and five walks in two innings. She struck out three.

Wonders didn’t allow a run or a hit in her 2/3 innings and Jochems surrendered three earned runs on three hits and five walks in 1 2/3 innings. She struck out one.

BCLUW 16, Baxter 0

CONRAD — The Bolts were limited to three hits and they committed three errors during a 16-0 loss to BCLUW on Friday.

The Comets led 2-0 after one and ended the game early with a 14-run third. BCLUW is 9-0 against Baxter since 2007.

Bottorff doubled, Beals and Shanks had the other hits and Frasher walked once.

Wonders took the pitching loss after allowing five earned runs on seven hits in two innings.

Shanks allowed 11 runs — four earned — on two hits, three walks and two hit batters in 1/3 of an inning.

Grunstead got two outs, including one strikeout, but walked three.

Raegan Crawford led BCLUW (4-0, 3-0) with two hits, two runs, two RBIs and three steals and Allison Ward tallied two hits, two runs and one RBI.

Klayre Gallentine allowed four hits and struck out three over four innings in the circle and posted two hits and two RBIs at the plate.
